Can a bad intermediate shaft sound like a clunking under your feet as the Jeep goes over uneven roads? This noise started recently and is getting worse.
/quote
Yes.
Motor mounts, transmission mounts, and front differential bushings are tired but still intact.

From my adventures this morning…

This will be my third replacement of the rear CV of the front driveshaft in 232,000 miles. Easy to log into my DriveshaftParts.com account and re-order.

Not much grease left in there.

Honestly, 75k on a joint isn't horrible. I have a similar problem with my front shaft (which I REALLY need to rebuild and get out of the cargo area). In my case it was stupidity in my part - I left out the cardboard 'seals'.... Guess where my grease is... The underbody and the DS of the trany...(misspelled because **** the filter)

Hauled some Kayaks again for a nice morning on the lake. Tomorrow morning I'm going to look at a WJ. My intro to Yeep was adopting my wife's old Grand Cherokee and I loved that thing. Always wanted another one. Found a 2002 on Marketplace, seems to have been really well cared for. If it passes the inspection/test drive, might bring it home. Anyways, here's a lake:

Best thing to do? Run 8ga wire from the battery to a pair of relays behind each light assembly-1 each for hi and low beam. Use the factory wiring to toggle the relay. Use the high current side of the relay to feed the bulbs.

Ya a relay harness is a SOLID upgrade.

Tried to check the oil level in the transmission. I've noticed that it starts to shift pretty hard after the transmission has been driven for an extended period of time. When I checked the fluid when I got home yesterday after a long drive I shifted through the gears, put it in park and checked the fluid level. It seemed overfilled, which is the opposite of what I expected. I tried to check the fluid level this afternoon after driving it and it seemed to read low. So, uh, Idk. The fluid level check process seems pretty straightforward on paper but so far I'm having trouble getting a consistent measurement.

Edit for relevant info: The transmission was replaced with a salvaged unit with 104k miles in 2019 before I purchased it in 2020. The valve body on the salvage trans was damaged according to the work orders I have, so we have a new(er) salvaged trans with original valve bodies in my KJ. But new fluid and filter was also done at the same time the trans was installed. So fluid and filter should be good.

This is for the KK but should be similar for you if you have the 42RLE. If you hit the transmission pan with a temperature gun, you can calculate what the level should be. There is some wiggle room around the line where you can still be fine.

I was just thinking about where I could get a temp reading on the transmission but didn't think to measure at the pan, thanks a lot! Oh, wait, I have the 45RFE. But I did find a similar graph in a technical document somewhere

You’re welcome! I got the temperature gun to measure my trailer’s wheel bearings but it has come in handy in ways like this. Pretty inexpensive too.

Okay, used a laser thermometer on the trans pan and a chart for the 45RFE and it is indeed overfilled. I'll get a pump at the auto store tomorrow morning and try and suck out some fluid. Maybe start with half a quart and remeasure.

in 2 weeks, I gotta get the khaki jeep through inspection. after that I can drop the pan, pull the solenoid pack, and see if it can be saved. otherwise I have to seriously consider yanking the trans from the 65th parts jeep. the bright side of that would be, I'd then also have the NP242 pulled from it, and I can think harder about putting that in my jeep. :D

I suspect my Napa Reman filter has left the chat in a matter of a few hundred miles. So that's cool. There's 0 fluid movement in the reservoir when turning the wheels. Unless I've got a fat bubble in there somewhere but I've bled it a few times since installing the new pump

Lmao, update, more happened: Went to pull out this morning and drive the pup to the park and was met with a horrible grinding noise from under the hood. Opened the hood to see smoke and one of the hard lines in the AC system spewing some kind of green fluid. I killed the engine, disconnected the compressor, started laughing and explained what had happened to my wife who was trying to figure out what was going on. Fired her back up, everything seemed good and off we went.

I seem to have angered some Jeep deity

Interesting.
So one of the major problems with the khaki jeep, was neglected maintenance. Transmission especially was WAY over due when I got it (like 136k miles on the factory tran.ny fill!) I put new fluid and filter in it, and it was having trouble locking up the torque converter (P0740 IIRC, along with temperature codes.) Temperature codes were the tran.ny cooler was clogged/blocked/not flowing. Fixed that.
P0740, only reason for that would be clogged screens on the TCC solenoid. Given how horrid the fluid was, no wonder. After 2300 miles apparently the TCC is locking up again, as I was just watching PIDs on my Autel, and I could see Turbine and Output speeds matching, and the 'Precent gear TCC state' showing active. Now however it likes to throw a P1775 - Solenoid Switch Valve Latched In TCC Position. Which which tells me one of the solenoids is getting stuck. According to my book...

Guess I'm pulling the solenoid pack and giving it a thorough cleaning. Was already expecting that anyways.
Also still likes to toss a P0218 - High Temperature Operation Activated.

When I got it it desperately needed spark plugs (OG also in that case), which meant it was being driven with massive misfires, which killed the passenger catalytic. Stole the pair from the 65th parts jeep. Also took the back glass, as the latch plate had separated from the glass, the blower motor resistor, and the passenger tail light (which the teenage female operator of said khaki jeep, promptly backed into someone else's car and trashed that housing.) Then there was the non-functional ABS due to them changing the ABS module and apparently the clock spring, and the shop that did the work didn't know how to calibrate it for some reason. Also replaced the driver's window regulator (came with that part), serviced the diffs, t-case, oil, coolant.

Need to get this thing sorted by the end of September, as I already have a firm offer to buy it then when a friend/client has the lease on his Wrangler expire the end of September, and he wants to clean up his finances basically. :D

Today I added a can of the ATS 505 CRF Fuel treatment to a full tank of gas to our 2009 KK “Quackers”. I checked my fuel mileage and calculated 16.71MPG! My daughter started putting on about 120 miles a week that’s all highway miles. That may explain the higher MPG. Around town we were getting between 13.5 and 14.5 MPG. This is the second can of the ATS 505 CRF I have used. For kicks I have recorded some data from my scanner for reference. All data taken with the engine idling. Bank 1 is a little lean and Bank 2 is a little rich. Both upstream O2 sensors are oscillating between .1 and .9 V so that’s good! Let’s see if the Long term fuel trims get closer to zero with the treatment. Hopefully the mileage gets better too. Stay tuned!

What kind of 'Napa reman filter' are we talking about? Sounds like PS, but I'm not familiar with a remanufactured filter of any sort. Is this an I line filter you added to the power steering system? In that case - you have it oriented correctly, on the return line to the reservoir, yes?

What do the MM marks correlate to? I'm unaware of a way to determine the mm of fluid in the trans of any passenger vehicle.

It's a great tool for several uses - I keep one in each vehicle for such uses, and also one dedicated to the kitchen.

Yes, the kitchen.

There's no better way to tell your cast iron skillet is at exactly the right temperature to crack those first few eggs, sear the pot roast, etc.

That and a cheap $10 Weller instant-read probe thermometer (and the knowledge of the 'carryover cook') will instantly make you a better cook. No more overcooked chicken or pork. No more overdone steak or undercooked cakes.

Hey @sota and @Hec In Omaha -

What are you guys using to pull this real-time data?
Burnkat,

I bought this scanner last August. Works great on our 2009 Liberty. If you do have a DTC it will tell you what it is and even provide links to videos or websites on how to correct the problem! You can view them right on the scanner! It even has a speaker so you can hear the video! Since it can connect to your WiFi, you can email yourself a diagnostic report too.
