transmission filter pics

i need to change my wifes transmission fluid and filters in her 02 liberty. ive read that the filters are different for the 42rle and the 45rfe, and that parts stores get them mixed up often. i cannot find the link i read about a year ago that had these pics in the post, so sorry if this has already been discussed. can someone post pics? ive searched google and get all kinds of results and dont really know which to trust. just dont want to tear the pan off only to find i have the wrong filter and then have to wait while its ordered or something like that. or would it be better and cheaper to just go to the dealer and get it off them?

well the 45 has two filters and the 42 only has one.

hey thanks. i didnt know the 42 had only 1. that helps as i was going to change fluid in my 06 in about 10k.

Yup, the 42rle only has one filter. The 45rfe has two and one is a spin on filter for the ****** cooler, neat setup I think.

10k is a little early but it cant hurt. I usually drop the pan on mine every 30k and do a filter change.

no. what i meant was in 10k miles it will be time for my first 30k filter and fluid change.

Here's a newbie question for all of you...
How do I know which transmission I have without pulling the cover?

Count the number of bolts on the pan. 13=42rle.

There should also be a tag on the side of it.

Since you have a 2006(given its not a diesel), you have the 42rle.

No problem, I figured you were wanting to make sure you got the right one. Just checked Autozone's site and they finally have the correct filter listed for a 2007 - my 2003 still shows as one of the spin-on models

It isn't due yet. I just turned over 26k on it. I will do it when it hits the 30k mark.
