I've got a 2WD Jeep Liberty
Never went off-road until recently and I got involved in two situations:
- The first, in a not so hard trail, no rocks, no mud but a very slippery solid terrain and
slightly downwards. I had to turn back because the road was blocked by other vechicle.
I tried to advance in reverse but it was absolutely not posible. The rear tires spun without control,
I lost traction immediatly. Simply there was no way to go up hill so I had to manage to go out
going forward.
- The second one, I found myself climbing on a trail with small rocks and ruts.
Very easy I think as a 2WD could make it without problem. But suddenly, weather turned so
rainy and the surface very slippery and a lot of mud. This time I got stuck and finally
had to be towed out there.
I want to drive my Jeep in light off-road trails for recreational purposes.
It is equipped with Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires (I know, these are not even LT rated,
indeed they are car tires fitted to a SUV).
I can´t afford a 4x4 Jeep (at least not now) so I want to increase the
off-road capabilities of my current one.
I need your valuable opinion here.
I'm thinking in replacing tires with BF Goodrich All Terrain or even Mud Terrain ones.
I think that in a 2WD, it´s important to take the greatest advantage a tire
can give, so that's why I'm thinking of the Mud Terrains. Wich ones are better?
Will these tires (both types) give a real advantage over the Goodyear Eagle ones?
Or no matter wich tires, a 2WD won't make it through even light off-road?
I've heard some people's advice telling me that with all terrain tires,
a winch and perhaps a rear differential lock these SUV would make it as long as not
abandoning light off-road courses (By the way, could a rear differential
lock be helpful for a 2WD).
What do you think off?
I'd be glad of listening points of view.
