I never learned much about our ‘93 XJ because the only thing that ever broke during the twelve years we owned it was the clutch sl4ve cylinder. That conked out twice, five years apart. We added a bit over 200k miles to the 65k it had on it when we bought it in 1995. I may have also replaced the thermostat, but otherwise nothing but regular and PM type stuff.
Just before we moved, we gave it to some friends who were on hard times, and they drove it another nine months before a tie rod gave out. By then they were doing better, and in mountain country even a broken Jeep has value, so they traded it in on something and have been fine ever since.
I drove a ‘73 Beetle for ten years, and it’s been almost twenty since I had to move on from that car. Now I find myself in the mood, and with the means, to geek on a vehicle once more. By sheer dumb luck I purchased the Jeep that was good for that sort of thing, for about half the price of any Wrangler I saw out there.
