Taking the KJ into a real trans shop this Thursday for the P0740 code. During normal diagnostic procedures for a transmission, is there any reason to have to drain coolant out and need to refill? If there is some test that involves loosing coolant, I'll be sure to put some HOAT in the back for them.

It's a stupid but worthwhile question to ask :happy175:

No sir not at all. Trans fluid is actually cooled, unlike oil and the whole block being cooled by coolant/water.

In my experience they've not drained any fluid out for testing - just put the scanner on it and run diagnostics. These trannies are so electronically controlled they do all their analysis via their scan tools.

I did have the shop drop the pan when mine was shifting poorly and the scanner came back with CVI numbers that were out of range (Clutch Volume Index.) When the CVI's are out spec it means the clutches are worn/shot and the only real solution is a rebuild or new ******.

I'm pretty sure your 0740 code is something in the electronics or the valve body which is far easier to deal with. Keep us posted.

P.S. If they are a good shop they will have HOAT in stock and will replace any fluid with the proper stuff. If they pull out a jug of Prestone Universal get the hell out of there...

I can't imagine a reason why they'd need to touch the radiator fluid.
Only excuses I can think of is a line going to the radiator but even then they'd have a hard time convincing me.
Was that transmission noticeably bad?

I've seen a car with this code once, not a jeep though. Turned out the owner didn't have the transmission oil changed as often as required. Forget the mileage but it was sooner than her old car required it.
We thought her transmission was on the way out or needed to be repaired. Thing was it never actually drove bad, but the oil was dirty. Very dirty but not burned yet. New filter and fresh fluid (no flush) the code went away and has stayed gone for two years so far and a lot of miles. I've heard of other cars with similar problems. It's a strange code I think in the car I worked on it was something to do with over drive.

Not sure if that has anything to do with your problem.

No symptoms at all. Just comes up with that code after a few hours on highway driving.
