Hi all

I have 02 Liberty 4x4 (selec-trac). I had center console out and inadvertently shifted t-case into 4-lo. Now the lever moves freely and I've read all of the posts and pics I can find on here and I still can't diagnose the issue - bushing or cable. Attaching photos... Please help!

My eyes are really bad (damn allergies) so can't really tell much from your image. If the cable connection to the shifter is okay under the console then I'd bet the bushing where that cable attaches to the shift lever on the tcase let go. It's a rigid rubber bushing that will deteriorate with time. Happened to me a few years ago. There are some alternative fixes out there (Link: http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/f196/cheap-fix-transfer-case-cable-bushing-clip-47531/) but i just went factory and replaced mine with the following:

BUSHING. transfer case shifter. Shift Cables for JEEP LIBERTY (2002 - 2013). #68001899AA

BTW it really is that stupid expensive. You'd swear it was a Ford part

One more thing, you can reach under there and shift the lever by hand to get it out of 4Lo (I've done it on my selec-trac)

I would LOVE to just get it out of 4wd and repair later- forgive my ignorance-how hard is it to shift by hand? Would I push the cable forward like the lever would or do I have to access the gears?

should be able to just get under there and move it to two wheel
May take some pressure but doable

The cable attaches to a little lever on the case. I just moved the lever back (literally IIRC). At the time I figured since you pull the handle up for 4wd and that pulls the cable and hence the lever forward, then back would be appropriate for 2wd. No matter, it will only go one way since it is maxed out in 4Lo. May take some force but It didn't seem to hard to me and you could feel the positions.

I got it done- although I had to use a hammer and a piece of wood. Thanks again!

Wow, glad you got it. So the bushing was toast?

Do you use your 4wd often? I do use the full time regularly (every other week or so) and will drive around my yard in part time and 4Lo just for kicks maybe once a month. Seems to keep thing happy. Mine shifts real smooth through all of them now.

The bushing was shot. I haven't been able to move the lever past full-time for a while. I recently had the console out and lubricated both 4wd and ebrake cables and could get to neutral and haven't thought about it since then.

When I got my license 20+ yrs ago, I inherited my dads 1985 Dodge Ram (I'm 5'2" girl, so normal for Mississippi, lol). It had 4wd and I hunt/fish and used it a lot but it was a constant headache and repair. I try to forget I have it now until I get stuck-bad memories, maybe? I find it rare that i need it. I have so many things that need fixing on her that I'll either forget 4wd or add to my list.

Let's pretend last weeks issue didn't start with me looking at my kids "hey let's see if Libby can make it thru this mud hole"... :)
