Hi All,

I have looked through the forum and even the KJ parts list but still have this newb question remaining!

What is the hose for that enters the stock air box near the bottom on the drivers side? The one that has the small rectangular foam filter where it enters (inside of) the box.

What if anything does it mean if there is a small amount of oily substance on said foam filter?

Thanks in advance,

Thank you kindly Sir!

If I were to squeeze the filter completely 1 or 2 drops would come out, and there was a very light (1/2" round) stain where I would imagine it would get sucked up into the air filter. I really don't want to continue with putting in my new Amsoil filter if it is going to get oiled by the breather tube.

I almost don't want to ask but what would increase the amount of oil coming back through this hose to the air box?
prepares for an expensive sounding answer

That could be many things............

1-plugged PCV valve
2-Blocked oil drains in the heads
3-plugged hoses
4-piston rings are bad(big $$$$)

and there's more also but those are the main ones.

I did a little more reading although it was about blow back on the 4.0l, and as you point out it could be a costly problem... potentially caused by previous neglet.

Well I'm approaching 40k miles and I can't really be sure what has been done to the KJ prior to Oct 08. I am getting the trans and diff fluids changed this week so I suppose it would not hurt to get them to check/replace my PCV to start with.

Thanks a million for your response.

(The wife walked in and said "Hey the guy with your favorite Jeep answered your question!?")

Cheers,

If I keep my stock intake, I plan on separating that system to it's own filter box, with a breather filter clamped on to the hose. You can use a catch can, or fuel filter (certain type) as a catch can to put as a spice-in to the hose. I hollow out my PCV, and put a catch can there. I did this with my 2000 Avenger, and changed the fuel filter when it filled with oil. That was like once every year... The neat thing with this Jeep setup, the PCV looks like it is in the oil-fill tube, so any oil goes back into the pan, no need for a catch can here. The hose that goes into the Airbox? If you get any oil in the breather filter, a catch can will eliminate that... I use them all the time, and will with this jeep when I get things together.

Too much blow-by will cause more oil to be present. That's bad compression rings.

If there was just a little oil in sponge bob I wouldnt stress. Clean it out and change out the PCV valve and see how things go.
