So my speedometer stopped working on my way to work this morning.
Stopped working completely and sits at zero with no movement or bouncing of needle. I have no codes for speed sensor.
Could it be a bad stepper motor in gauge cluster? Any ideas?

You've already named 2 most likely causes, third would be a loose wire connection.

If it were a loose or chafed wire wouldn't it set a code for the sensor?

Sometimes we put a bit too much faith in "codes" and not enough in hands on inspection. Unplug the sensor wire at differential and see if it throws a code then after driving.

The connection at the rear diff speed sensor has been rigged and there's exposed wires and lots of corrosion. Where can I find a new connector with pigtail? Thanks

Mopar has the repair kit, about 25-30 bucks depending on where you buy it from

Most common cause is the rear speed sensor that goes into the rear axle. I re wired the sensor 4 times before I finally went to the dealer and got the whole pig tail. It comes with new wire also. Make sure if you go down this route, you pay attention to which wire is on each side of the connector as the new wires the dealer gives you are solid blue.
What year is your Liberty??

Replace the bad harness and make sure it is not likely to rub on anything.
I had this problem due to the connector on the sensor not being firmly plugged in...took about a week of driving before the CEL cleared itself.

You can excercise the cluster by holding in the Odometer reset button while turning the ignition ON.

All the LEDs will light and the various gauges will move back and forth.
This is not an actual test for the cluster...just excercises it!

The Odometer display will end with a code something like 4.10....this is the firmware level of the cluster!

Great. It's really hard to find any info on the connector but you can find the speed sensor anywhere and that part number is 4799061.

However you're going to need to replace the speed sensor connector which you cannot find online. Best option is to get one at a junkyard or go to the dealer and say you need this:
"I need the rear speed sensor and pigtail with the connector for a 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7. Make sure you have your VIN also.
I cannot find the part number for the life of me for that pigtail. Make sure you have some electrical tape, crimp connectors and a crimp tool because you will be cutting the old one off. Make sure you seal them too otherwise you'll get corrosion. I know, I've replaced mine 4 times until I did it right and I did exactly what I told you.
