I'm not a mechanic. My wife was driving the liberty and said something is rattling underneath and smells like its burning. Drove it back home for about 20 minutes. Never overheated, No indicator lights came on.

Looks like the AC pulley was throwing oil by the pattern. Can you wiggle any of the pulleys by hand? Does the compressor engage? What does the belt drive look like when it's running? I'm sure some experts will be along quickly to help you out better than I can.

So this was long before I was part of my Jeep's life.
The jeep still has remnants of those spots.
I don't know how true this is but when I asked the wifey awhile ago about it said she thinks that was due the bad oil pan that needed replacement.

Pulleys are tight. Belt is tight. AC is non operational. Belt and pulleys are stable while running. There is a metallic clicking sound.

Take the belt off and check the pulleys if you haven't. Is the ticking noise still from the bottom or just the front? Something is throwing oil. Can you see anything from underneath? Crank seal okay?

I won't be able to get to it until Thursday probably because of work, but Thanks for your help so far. I keep you up dated.

Looks like a bad compressor. Disconnect the AC clutch and put a by pass belt on it if it is. The clicking may be the clutch for the AC. Unplugging the clutch lead or plug will stop that.

Mine made a metalic almost ratle like noise when the waterpump started to crap out on me. It was the first sign on my KJ that it was going and needed raplced. a month later I was on the side of the road with coolant all over and an overheated Jeep. Fixed the waterpump and no rattling anymore and no other issues.

It's official. It was a bad compressor. The compressor, clutch and orifice tube was replaced. $455 parts and labor.
