It's all about headlamps.
LOST JEEPS • View topic - 7" headlight with 60/100w bulbs.
More so about changing out the stock headlamp units for better lighting.
Not just the bulbs but the whole reflectors.
I've been wanting to replace the headlamps in our KJ for years now...
But it just isn't financially doable right now for me.
So instead I started by bending the headlamp bulb reflector shield out of the way.

This is my original post on LOST.

{If you guys want better performance from your stock Liberty headlamps...
This one is free*!

Remove the light bulb, get a flat head screwdriver and simply push the chrome
head lamp bulb deflector that sits in front of the head lamp bulb and push it down
and out of the way of the bulb*.
This will increase the light bulbs output dramatically!
Even with stock wattage bulbs.

*If you want, you can remove the headlamp assembly completely from your Jeep
and place the complete unit in your oven and heat the headlamp assembly enough
to soften the adhesive that keeps the reflector attached to the lens.
Then you can simply remove the bulb shield from the reflector housing.
The bulb shield has a sort of bayonet mount and needs to be pinched slightly on
each side with small needle nose pliers to be removed from the reflector.
Then re-assemble the headlamp assembly and yo are good to go.

Like I said, the amount of light output from stock 60/55 watt light bulbs is very noticeable.
Better than Hella 100/80 watt when the bulb shield was in place.
Re-adjusting the the headlamps is recommended.


I have a set of brand new Phillips 60/55 watt "High output" bulbs that I removed the "Blacked out"
coating on the tip of the bulbs too see if I can get even more light output from stock wattage bulbs.
All I used was a fresh X-acto knife razor blade to carefully scratch it off.



Was this modification legal?

I highly doubt it!

Sweet detail...need to do that on ours. Can't stand the low-level light output either, especially on long stretches of the roads we travel where deer hang out by at night.

So, was removing the black-out from the bulbs noticebly better?

...In this case you might as well do an HID conversion so you don't screw up any of your hardware in your Jeep.

That's my opinion anyways.

Eventually I'm going to install a pair of these LED headlamps:
Truck-Lite - Catalog Product : 7'' Round LED Headlamp, Complex Reflector Optics Design
HID conversion doesn't work efficiently in a Liberty's headlamp reflector.
Their not designed for HID's and cause annoying light output for oncoming vehicles.
And the light beam patern is more scattered.
If I did a HID conversion I would retrofit some from another make of car.
LED's are where it's at. Way better life span.
50,000 hours average compared to 2000-3000 hours for a HID
light capsule.

Yup, to each their own.
When I finally do the LED headlamp conversion I'll do a comprehensive "How to" write up for this site.

And thanks for the compliment on our Rig Marty!
It's still a work in progress and there are many little mods/improvements that I have planned for it.
So I'll have plenty of photographs and write ups to add to your "Pic's or it didn't happen" thread.
