Took a trip with the family this summer and ran into a space issue with the roof rack. Has anyone come up with a clever way to increase the cargo area? I was considering adding a basket that extended past the front cross bar. If I added legs with padded feet or even a padded bar the potential damage to the roof would be minimal.

Any thoughts?

Rock Lizard made a roof rack at one time that came clear up to the windshield,
just connected to the main 4 points that stock ones do and then rested on the plastic strip that comes up from windshield
I have or had one, worked great on the 04 till I sold the roof rack and went back to one of his shorter ones
I have pictures, should be some on here somewhere

Another option may be a hitch mount cargo carrier..

I've got one of these and it helps a lot. The issue is the low mounting point. Several of the trails we camp off of would send the rack to the garbage bin with a quickness.

Thanks Tom. I'll look around more to see if I can find an image.

I found my new roof rack

In the attached pictures Marty ( Rock Lizard ) had just made the first one and had it powdercoated
That is the one I then had, not many out there, too hard to ship etc
But gives you an idea
I have some pictures somewhere on my home computer that maybe better

That is pretty slick! Thank you for sharing. I'm wondering if RRO has an add-on option to their standard roof rack to extend it forward. I hadn't considered asking until I saw yours.

Don't think they do ,
of course do not look to see what they have too much.
RRO is one of the least favorite companies to deal with
