how thick is that pin shaft? the hitch kit i bought has lots of left over pieces, many of which are 1/4-1/2" (didn't measure and haven't looked at them for months) steel plates about 1"x 1 1/2" with possibly a 9/16" hole through them... seems like it would be a good shim for this application if the hole can be made the right size

Well the pin shaft was suppose to be 7/8th, but it's not. At the Stainless shop, they tried the pin and they decided on 1 inch washers. I would say that 15/16 is probably it.
I also considered welding some thick wall steel tube for the spacers, but I think I am going to be ok for now with this new washer set up.
The 6th stainless washer does not fit, and there was some upward movement and clunking from going over bumps while attached.
I created some plastic washers and added a photo on page 2 of this article, as the final shims, to eliminate noise.

the get rid of the rattle on my hitch I just used electrical tape. wrapped it a couple of times just enough where it goes in very snug and that's it.
Don't know why you went overboard with welding all around, you could have just tacked it and it would have stayed put. Anyway, I don't see the welding thing as being that much of a big deal, you can grind the weld down if you ever needed to change the receiver. I welded the ball on mine once, tacked it lol, and had to change the ball at some point so I just took the grinder to it.
Has anyone tried welding a D ring to the frame of the hitch assembly? One on each side of the receiver... just thinking it would make sense and would look good.

btw, the washer idea looks like crap and even welfare lol just teasing ya but it's true, get a spacer or something.
I do have a concern, as Tom mentioned, about the ball fitting properly now....
