2002. Replaced pcv in December. It looks worse now.
I’m not using the insert if that matters.
Even if this doesn’t hurt the engine I’d like to fix it. The 03 doesn’t do this at all and it has the insert.

Thanks guys. I’ll definitely check that out.
I been using regular oil. Just started the semi syn maybe 2 oil changes ago.
I drive at least 20 minutes a day to and from work. Which is some highway but mostly city.
I take plenty of long drives as well. Doesn’t make sense compared to the 03.
I’m just tired of seeing it like that and now that it’s cold out I been paying for oil changes and the service guys have a field day with it. Like really.
Only had the 02 since last year summer and didn’t notice as much. But some was still there. Nothing like this. I almost think this was the worse I’ve seen it.

So is re routing the pcv going to move this funky stuff somewhere else in my engine where I can’t see it? I’d like to see under my valve cover but unfortunately that requires removing it (unlike the cases where the oil cap is located on the cover in some vehicles)

Dino oil & cold weather not good for flow, or cleanliness.
It can take 40 minutes to really get oil hot in cold climates.
You will find that full synthetics have better cleaning properties and flow extremely well even at -35F.
With the whole TSB re-design, you wont need a spoon to clean this gunk anymore in the cap or filler neck. :icon_lol:
Why? Well...there is no longer a PCV system attached on the oil filler tube!
No more mixing/ venting pcv there again. Also Mr.Sponge Bob is happier & cleaner inside the airbox.
The new larger PCV re-routes with the short hose from intake into the new PCV- driver's side. Problems solved. :party52:

You can also run a set like me where you add the new redesigned PCV valve and then also run a pcv oil catch can.

So none of this stuff will end up under the valve cover even after the update?
I’m going to hunt down the parts this coming weekend. I really hope I don’t have to deal with this anymore it’s been a real pain to keep cleaning it out. Thanks guys

My 02 was clean as a whistle at the oil fill tube after the change. I also upgraded to the 04 and up intake tube to get rid of the 02s resonator box. I pulled all the upgrade pieces off of it before I donated it so I'll be putting it on my 05 if it gets bad. Hasn't really been too bad the past two winters.

I doubt you'll get any under the valve covers since I believe the crud is only localized to the fill tube and PCV because of the flow of hot crankcase vapors with some water vapor into the PCV system. The water vapor condenses due to the cold exposure at the fill tube. Once you reroute the PCV the flow of moisture stops and the new fill tube is sort of a dead space. I'm sure it's possible to get a little condensate up there but without the flow through that area it should be much less.

Good point. Yeah I noticed the air intake on mine has the box in front the throttle body and the newer ones doesn’t. I’ll see if I can source one out or make my own.

Drive it more and longer
Never have those issues on the 03,04 or 05 but they get ran, ran hard and warmed up good

My 03 has the box and zero condensation/ yellow junk

She’s filled up weekly so I’m guessing @200 miles a week. I don’t drive like parade float that’s for sure.

I looked at it again today. I noticed I don’t have any vacuum lines going into my air box.
I do have the bigger box on top of the intake manifold. I was going to try and swap that out with a newer style next time I was at the junkyard

The 02s have two tubes from the breathers to the box on the throttle body. And the problem one, the long one from the PCV across and to the driver side of the intake manifold. There is no tube going to spongebob in the filter box.

Forgive me for my lack of experience with this. I just was going off the pictures and couldn’t find that sponge thing or any lines off the air box.
Those parts are all discontinued too
Was thinking about seeing if Advance auto had the correct pcv for the valve cover and filler neck then just using gernic hosing to make my own kit today

The 07 PCV just screws in where the one breather was in the left side head behind the valve cover. Then a short tube from it to the intake. IIRC The other breather can be run as it is for the 02 (into the passenger side of the center box) then just cap off anything that had a tube but doesn't now. You could pull the PCV off the filler tube and cap that as well. Just use a tubing that is oil resistant. Probably don't need all the fancy tubing from the discontinued TSB kit. I would think the local parts stores would have that PCV valve.
