it goes out in 4-wheel high.
Should I be looking at the switch on the transfer case?

Could be the switch on the case.
Has it disengaged to 2wd high?

Mine flicks on and off....the switch on the tip of the transfer case is faulty and needs replacement. There are some youtube videos about it available. Some say go from the top and take out the centre console...others say go from below but it looks like you need the arms of an octopus doing it this way.

Vacuum Disconect (CAD)? I don't know what you mean.
But since you mention "vacuum", I do have a CEL up.

I haven't checked to see if it actually shifts to 2-wheel high, but I suspect it does as it's a manual transfer case and not push-button/dial selector.

It took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to get up there. 5 minutes to swap the switch. Yeah the old one came out super easily.

I just check the prices.

mopar part is cheaper than aftermarket.
I guess you have to pay 20-30 more for lifetime warranty offered w/ aftermarket.

Sorry
CAD is a XJ (1984-91 ) not KJ, when the new topic popped up on my phone I didn't notice which forum it was on,

For the KJ it either s bad sensor or the transfer case is stuck in 4 wheel high.

If it's a Np231 transfer case it pretty easy to change the switch.

Manual transfer case, not electronic-so I suspect it's the sensor

The switch ought to look like this
You must be registered for see images attach

I've changed them on XJ and it's not that hard.
If it's just this switch it's a easy fix.

is the 242 that different?

The switch it self if very similar, np242 &231. The main difference is the 242 switch has more positions for the various modes (part time / full time)

On the 231 it's a very simple switch that is fairly easy to get at in the XJ, I've swapped them and the older vacuum line switches without dropping anything, not sure sure where the switch is on the 242 but it ought to be similar.

If the OP has a np231 and it is disengaged from 4 high, he probably could leave it alone until he wants to get to it. Unless the body computer does something with the info.
