Pad Slap

Did my 4th "pad slap" today at 62,000km (38,500 miles) on the original rotors.
The last set were EBC supreme, they were on the metal at 16,000km (10,000 miles).
That's about average for all 4 sets, minus the originals which lasted 20,000km (12,400 miles). The 2nd and 3rd sets were also OEM, but didn't do much better than the EBC's.
I think it's mostly down to city driving with speed bumps every 200 metres.

I wouldn't want to having the expense of changing rotors this often, but I guess the pad wear is higher with worn rotors.

OMG......4 pad changes in 38,500 miles?? If I am reading that right....

Traffic must be just like NYC down there. I guess I am lucky in Upstate as all we got is open highway and mountains up here.

do you ride the brakes all the time or what,
I changed out the fronts at 99,000 and they were still good, just had it tore apart and thought why not. Rears are at 124,000 and still good

Thats pretty amazing that youre only getting 10k out of pads. Mine are hardly half worn at 40k. Rears will be due around 50k though..

Even though we are the second owner of our KJ, it had the original brake pads that it left the factory with. (According to the full service history.)
We had the braking system served just about seven months ago. Just over 100,000.0 miles on the factory installed brakes!
The only problem we have now is the abundance of brake dust on the front wheels.

As far as EBC brake pads go, I've never had any issues of pre-mature wear with them!
I've been using them on my Classic Mini's for twenty plus years!
Long before most North American's even knew they existed!

I think it's got to be down to the traffic and so many speed bumps, you spend half your time breaking. My other KJ lives in New Zealand, that's got just over 12,000 miles on it and the pads don't look very worn at all.
Even though the EBC factory is in my home town, I'm afraid I'm not impressed. They squeeled the first half of their life, wore out quicker than OEM pads and looked pretty well cooked when I changed them the other day. They were the 7000 series green stuff, which cost less in the States than where they are made in the UK. I have just put some Canadian made, Power Parts ceramic pads on, we'll see how they go.

At least changing the pads is a lot easier than changing the oil, ha ha.
Especially with the heavy duty cooling which prevents removing the filter from the top.

Speaking strictly for myself, I live in Seattle-- the ninth worst traffic city in the entire nation. That's actually an improvement from 1999 when we had the second worst traffic in the nation, just under the infamous Los Angeles. My entire life is pretty much spent in stop-and-go traffic. My seven-year-old daughter is well-versed in traffic speak, patterns, parallel and pay-for parking culture, miles-long traffic jams etc. I was pretty impressed that my pads have lasted for over 70k miles.

My stock pads look brand new at 35k miles.

As far as I know my rear pads were the first to go @ 40K Miles. Front rotors still had that goofy locking washer thing on one of the lugs when I put my front spacers on. They might be getting close with 50K miles

bought my jeep from a dealer at 67k miles, its at 70k now (2 months later) and it needs front pads. I'm kinda really pissed at the dealership but what can you do. Just need tools to get this done.

So who is running what brand of brake pads that are good and don't leave a lot of brake dust, etc???

Maybe those brake pads Mangate is getting are not that good quality-wise....??

I think the OEM pads are pretty good, they lasted longer thn EBC. The only trouble is they cost 3 times the price at the stealership.
I don't think the EBC's braked any better either.
Maybe a Canadian here knows the Power Parts pads, they cost me about $45.

I used EBC's on my Focus hatchback. They lasted a long time for me even after hard use on a lot of switchback roads(can you say fun times?) I'll go with the ceramics from Napa when it comes time for pads/rotors on my Liberty.

I'm at 62k, I think it's on the 2nd set of pads......(bought it used)....still OE rotors.

Just thought about this- should the calipers say Jeep on them....I think they did on the 05 WK's. Mine don't say Jeep.

I run the cyro PowerSlot front rotors(I have rear drums) and Napa ceramic pads,installed at 18,000miles(nothing wrong with the OEM stuff,just upgraded) and now I have almost 68,000miles and my pads look brand new and the rotors just started to get that rusty look after 4 years.

I have another set of of front cryo PowerSlots going on my HP44(for SFA swap),I'll see how they hold up against Wilwood rear pads and rotors on my RockJock60.

Just Go ceramic if you ask me ... More expensive but i never regretted it so far ....
