While changing the oil & filter in my Liberty I discovered this;

Am I going to have to pull the engine to replace the oil pan?
It doesn't appear to be leaking badly yet. I resisted the urge to flake off any corrosion.

That is the worst salt corrosion I have ever seen yet. Darn Canuck winter's!
Proof that in salt conditions, your oil pan must be kept clean & painted well!!
Not Leaking badly where is it leaking from and how much?
Ya I think it is a huge job to lift up and move engine to replace pan.
Sorry to see that.

So it would be simpler to pull the engine than to drop the front axle assembly?

Hmmm...maybe I should do a SFA swap while I have it apart...

What is even worse it the fact it is probably rusted inside and who knows what kinda chunks are now floating around inside.

The other day while under my Jeep this piece of the oil pan flaked off.

Geesh, and I'm really surprised the oil isn't pouring out.

Today I went to the dealership to pickup a replacement Mopar oil pan. While waiting for the fellow to find the oil pan gasket I inspected the "new" oil pan. It did seem double walled and rusting already!!! Imagine!!! :favorites68: There was already blister in the paint on the inside that likely was rust. I'm not installing rusty parts!

Needless to say I told him to take it back and try again. If the next one comes in rusty I'm going to tell my dealership to go pound sand.

Darn road salt. That pan is on borrowed time I think.

Around here (Upstate NY) they use a lot of road salt. I spray off the underneith with the power sprayer at the do-it-yourself car wash after every storm. Then when I do my oil changes I wipe an oily rag all over the oil pan and also the ****** pan. So far they are holding up.

Just some thoughts.

I need to start what Dave does.... But I'd think the front skid kinda shields it, no?

Yeah, I think so. I still wipe the pan down. My front skid is another matter as it is scratched and dinged up so it needs to come off and get sanded and repainted.....so I can ding it up again...haha

I have to remove my ****** skid and then can access the rear of oil pan. Then you have top take front skid off to do the front side of oil pan.
Best thing to do if you are in salt zones is: Once a year pull both skids and clean the oil pan with a good de-greaser.
Then sand it quick and give it couple of coats of high temp rattle black paint job.
Hopefully salt wont attack then, mine is still in good shape with paint.

Ye gawds, that's nasty looking!:signs16:

Perhaps the Italians DID have a good idea when they put an aluminum pan on my oilburner!

Ummm, just a thought - if the engine oil pan is in that bad a shape - you didn't happen to take a good look at the ****** pan as well?

What I don't understand is that I have a 95 YJ with an oil pan in better shape than an 04 Liberty :wtf2:

and it would be easier to change too...

I feel for ya. I'm in the same boat with mine but not quite as bad. I'm trying JB weld to see if I can stop the bleeding for a while. Right now I drip about a quart a month.

Things are made cheaper now than they were then... anything to save a dollar... both in construction and assembly. :pp:

Agreed. Reference the thread on the Valvoline oil change shop, using a smaller filter than speced to save the cost of a 1/2 quart of oil, and then having the balls to tell the customer if he didn't like it, TS.

A friend in Charlotte has both an 02 Limited and an 05 Limited - V6 and CRD respectively. He said you can park the two side by side and even someone who was unfamiliar with the vehicles could see the difference in build quality - the 02 being far and away better built - even the rubber weatherstriping on the 05 was thinner and cheaper than that on the 02.

Mine was clean once..Until I went with Ryan in the mud... still cant get at it all!
Damn that thing is almost HJ clean underneath Troy.
I guess it helps that with such a lift you can easily get under and spray/clean etc.
Nice and spotless until the mud flies...or maybe you avoid it??
