KJ not turning over

Got a 2002 3.7 auto KJ that has started not turning over

New battery , in P (park) and key turns but starter does not turn
Saw a page say you can test the starter by shorting 2 pins on the starter relay and the starter turns over fine (attached pic)

Any ideas what to check next?

Did you try to switch that relay with a like one? I think the high beam relay and maybe the fuel pump relay are the same. Just look at the markings. I'm not good with electricity but you probably just bypass it by jumping the posts with that wire.

Now that I think of it, you should also be able to test the starter relay by swapping it into another position like the high beam slot.

Swapped the relay with the one next to it (wiper I think) as it had the same numbers on but still the same , starter does not turn over

When shorting those 2 pins and putting the starter relay back in the starter turns (ignition on) but does not start

I know its not the battery or starter , just looking for the next thing to check

So when shorting the two pins with the ignition switch off it doesn't spin the starter? I thought shorting the pins would bypass the ignition switch but I'm not all that electrically inclined. If the starter spins with the ignition switch off, is the ignition switch okay? Does it work in accessory mode or feel loose when turning?

Ignition switch feels fine (lights come on etc) but when turning to start the engine nothing

If I leave the key in the "ignition on" position and short those 2 relay pins starter turns but the engine does not start

Ya sounds like a ignition problem since you are able to spin the starter via relay.

But seriously ..ha ha..if you can give the starter a few good hammer taps, it may then turn over.
Sounds like a new starter motor is in order though...

but if it was the starter it would not turn over when I short the 2 pins on the starter relay under the bonnet

You dont have a security chip key correct?

not sure on the security key (if I have one)
got 2 keys and tried both

going to look at the "ignition actuator" and switch next

The Grey colored Jeep Key is a sentry chip key, but it should still start with non chip key for a few seconds and then key light comes on, but does disable fuel pump.
I wonder if there are any stored codes that may point to a problem area.

you have the keys with the immobilizer chip in it.
However, there would be a P1685 code if the jeep fails to recognize it.

Sift selector​ switch in the transmission. If it is bad it will send a signal that it's in gear and it will not turn over. Valve body has to be removed to remove switch. Luckily when mine did it the wire connector had come loose.
