New owner of a '02 Liberty Sport (132k). I've noticed the key in the ignition is removable regardless of the position it's in. This is problematic, as turning off the ignition by turning the key all the way toward the driver and removing it actually leaves it set in ACC position and slowly drains the car's battery. This happens with all 3 keys I was given to the vehicle. My teenage son is the primary driver and I'm worried he's going to come out of class and find a dead battery. Any advice (above a trip to the dealership)? Thx.

Actually, I can remove the key in every position, even when the car is running. If I do the latter, it keeps running...

Key tumblers are worn. I've had a couple of vehicles like that, and actually preferred it that way. Made it easy for winter warm ups where you can lock it up, go back inside the house for a couple of minutes, then leave and lock the house and open the car back up again, all without having to separate any keys on the chain. You can either replace the tumbler assembly, or pay attention to where the off position is. Off position is the same off position mine has, and I can turn the engine off without going into the acc position. Only difference is your key will come out.

My 03 does the same 195k+ I have gotten used to it the only problem is when someone needs to move it to get out of the driveway most of the time they will go all the way down to ACC.

And here I thought it was a GM thing. My current 69 Camaro does the key removal dance, another 69 Camaro from years ago did it, my old Wrangler did (GM style tumbler), and our old Crapalier did it.

My first car, a 1966 Buick Skylark, had the same problem. When I was 18 (legal drinking age in Virginia at the time), I was rushing into a store to beat the midnight deadline to buy beer and forgot to put the car in park. I just grabbed the keys and ran for the store.

When I came out my car was out in the street and there were about eight Spanish guys pushing it down the road. My first thought was that they were stealing it. I ran up to them and started pointing at my car and yelling at them. They started yelling back and one of them pointed to the spot where I had parked it, then drew a line with his finger out into the street where we all were standing. It was then it dawned on me that these guys had just done me a huge favor.

Fortunately, I had bought a lot of beer (I was heading back to a party), so I popped a case open and started passing them around. You'd be surprised to know how much beer eight Spanish guys can drink in a parking lot at midnight when the beer is free. After another round or two of "Gracias" on my part I tossed what was left of the beer in the back seat and went on to the party, where I was promptly accused of drinking it all myself and making the whole story up.

Assuming this is an automatic there should be a cable from the transmission only allowing you to remove the key in Park.

There is a sticky above in this forum about "key stuck in ignition and the fix"

Sounds like you need a new tumbler though.

A shifter interlock won't let the key turn back to the off position until the trans is in park. And tumbler assemblies that aren't worn out won't allow the key to be removed till it's in the off position. His key will go to all the positions. But being able to remove the key in any position, as his is doing, is due to internal wear of the tumbler assembly.

Thx, everyone. Sounds like I need a new tumbler. How hard is it to buy a pre-keyed tumbler and install? I wouldn't really care if I needed a new key that only worked in the ignition, while the existing keys will still open the door. Is this the same procedure to install? 5083915AB « AutoRepairInstructions.com
