Was just wondering if this type of movement is normal on the passenger CV. I've never tried moving it like that before but since I've been getting some vibes recently (which I thought I had narrowed down to u joints) figured I'd give the CVs a good shake down

If ya push on the sleeve/can you will get movement and sometimes a bit of a clunk.
Mine is fine like that as long as boot's not leaking it seems to be ok.

That's odd, I posted it with my phone and it seemed to work there, I'm on my pc now and it still works for me. Anywho it's avid of me pushing up on the shaft vertically and getting movement up and down, not sure if it's normal intermediate shaft play or what

Worked on my phone which hardly works well at anything.

Seems like a lot of play to me. I haven't done anything to the driveline on my KJ except u-joints but it seems pretty clanky compared to other cv joints I worked on long ago.

Alec now that I've seen the video, yours is way loose, somethings up there.
You can easily push the whole thing up with just your thumb.
If you see my video by clicking on the image, I have to use mega force to even get mine to move slightly.

So does anyone have any ideas what could cause that up and down movement?

That does not look normal to me for a CV joint on ANY vehicle.

To me, that looks like a bad CV joint. It's likely come apart internally.

Bad CV and/or bad half shaft. I would replace both (I did!)

It seems like its coming from inside there not the cv, so i guess it'd be the intermediate shaft. Hopefully nothing else is up in there

Yes that's usually all it is. Although i think there is also an axle bearing in there you might want to replace while you're at it. I need to get in there and replace a seal so I might do the bearing too.

The way it moves the bearing is probably wiped. How does a solid metal shaft go bad apart from the splines getting ripped off

That's pretty bad for play...even when new there might be a bit of slop there but no clunks or anything.

That's the shaft but check ebay, $134 seems a bit steep. I got mine for $110ish.

Well looks like I got my next project planned out. I fix one thing and immediately after something else goes wrong. It's a vicious cycle

The way she's flopping, suspect your intermediate shaft. Mine was moving bad like that, picture of it below. When the shaft end gets worn so badly, it acts like a wobble socket extension. Are you getting a clunking noise in front?

Occasionally in tight turns I'll get one but i've always attributed that to the almost non existent steering rack bushings. other than that not really no clunks to speak of

And they're back but only at highway speeds. I did actually do u joints last night since they were bad anyway, took it on the highway to see if that cured the vibes but it didn't so yea next month the halfshaft will be getting done
