My wife's 03 Liberty Limited has an intermittent grinding noise on braking. It sounds like metal on metal brake noise. I've checked the wheel bearings, suspension, and brakes on all 4 wheels. Not sure where to look next. Pads and rotors up front are brand new, Duralast Gold C-max pads, DG rotors. Rear were replaced last year with the same, over 1/2 pad left on all 4 pads, with smooth rotors. Any ideas?

Nothing worse than an intermittent noise like that. Just makes it that much harder to track down. I had a similar noise on my fronts a few sets of pads ago. One of the slides wasn't clipping into the caliper tightly and would move sometimes when braking. Must have allowed the pad to pivot enough to make some inappropriate contact with the central portion of the rotor. Tried to bend the tabs to tighten but finally just replaced the pads and hardware and problem went away. Might check them and make sure everything (slides and slide pins) is greased well too.

Welcome to the forum, too!!

I appreciate the input Itd, I already looked for ANY contact marks anywhere but the contact surface on the rotors. There are no marks and no movement to be found. Thanks for the welcome, btw.

When did it start,
was there anything that happened prior to hearing the noise,
how long after the new brakes were installed did it start
did you use all new mounting hardware on the new pads
have you checked the parking brake shoes as well

Brakes are 3 months old. Started a couple of weeks ago. All hardware is new as well. Parking brake shoes are clean and adjusted properly. No impacts, accidents, etc before.

I know this will sound weird but the CV joint on the transfer case end of the front drive shaft sits right under the driver's seat. It is a known wear item and when it goes it makes all kinds of crazy noises. Because of where it is located the sound can appear to come from the transmission, the front wheels, the rear, etc.

Take a look at this thread; there's a picture of a bad CV joint and if yours looks like it then it needs replaced.

How To: Change front driveshaft CV joint

The replacement CV can be found at driveshaftparts.com - it's about $50 and is a pretty straightforward replacement as you can see in the How-To. Don't let a mechanic tell you the entire drive shaft has to be replaced. Most of us on here have replaced that CV at one time or another.

Oh, and (welcome)

Bob
