Ok, so a little background first so you know where I am at with it here. I went wheeling yesterday and it is cold here so the jeep was pretty much running all day with the heat on. On the way back I stopped to get something to eat and the key would not come out of the ignition. It just wouldn't cycle back to the last position so the key wouldn't come out. I tried everything I could think of (starting it again and shutting it off - Park Neutral - turning the steering wheel etc.......nothing. I have started and stopped now several times since and it is working fine. (WTF) It never happened before just this one incident. If it happens again permantly, I will end up replacing the entire locking mecanism....$$$

So my question now is that I am wondering if there is anything I could do (like putting some graphite in there or something) that might help? It is working fine now.

Believe its called a shift cable. That can go back causing the key to become stuck like that. If it happens again shove the gear shift into park and see if it comes out.

My key acted strange also, hung in ing. then getting to where I could remove key while jeep was running, finally it would not start jeep with out a great amount of cussing, and so forth, tried relays, etc. Took it to dealer, they replaced to piece on the opposite side of key switch, ignition switch I think it was called,I posted all this(part # etc.) in Liberty or death's post about ignition/steering column problems. I will see if I can find it.

Dave, found my old receipt from dealer, dated Nov.24,09. so the post refering to was in the week prior. my notes say fsm-19-8/9/10 the part # 4793576ac switch, we had it at the zone for 15-16$ if I had been able to figure it out.

I just had that happen to me over the weekend - the part about being able to remove the key while the ignition was still on. I haven't done anything about it yet. Not even sure if I can re-create the scenario or not. But I could shut everything down as per normal, so I'm not concerned yet.
