For the past few years I have had random misfires that were always due to failing coils packs. I got to the point I traveled with spares so I could just swap them on the side of the road. Eventually bit the bullet and bought Delphi ones and life was good for a while. Then earlier this year I got a persistent one on Cylinder 5. I swapped the pack, and it went away for a week or so, swapped the plugs, was ok for a couple days. Had the CAT through a code, so got them replaced (passenger side was mangled pretty bad due to the misfire). Got a compression test and they said that Cylinder 5 was at 120PSI while the rest were in the 180s. The shop that did the test said not to bother with the repair. Called a few other places and they all said the same thing. I added an oil stabilizer, forget which brand but the stuff that is supposed to help piston seals and it would run find for about 20-30 miles then start misfiring again. So pretty sure the diagnoses of bad rings/cylinder wall is accurate.

Got a used Forester to get around town, my plan is/was to take off a few parts and try and sell them (I bought new tires in June damnit) used and then just try and sell it as a mechanics special or get scrap value from it, but honestly I can't bring myself to do it. I didn't realize how much I really loved this stupid Jeep until facing not getting to drive it anymore.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a fix other than an engine swap? I was quote to repair the cylinder was going to run around $4k, but the other 5 are basically waiting to go out too. A used engine was $6k, but no clue on what other hassles it would come with. Remanufactured I was getting quotes from $8-10k. So none of that is realistic on a sub $3k vehicle when its running well.

'07 Liberty. I have a #6 reoccurring misfire. Have to clear it after each sit and idle. Clear it and drive a distance...perfect. Lengthy idle, it's back. Changed all plugs and coils and ran a few bottles of injection cleaner, 500 mile drive, still persistent. Just a little rough nothing severe.
Any suggestions? TIA

I had a blown head gasket and they are wrong that much of a compression difference is bad. I had both head gaskets done and had the heads resurfaced. I have not had any problems since.

Thank you for the reply, I had to get another car in the meantime and forgot to check back here till now.

How much did the resurfacing cost?
