I just love it when Betsy pays attention and learns things.

She has started using Nancy ( '04 KJ ) as her daily driver. Today it was 104 degrees F. She was driving in town with the AC on full. She actually noticed that the temp gauge was reading about 3/4 scale and stopped the car in the shade. She then popped the hood and without trying to remove the radiator cap, checked the coolant level by jostling the reservoir and watching the level! She heard me all those times I warned her about removing the cap!

She saw that there was coolant in the tank, so she called me for assistance.

I found that the radiator fan fuse was blown. I replaced it and confirmed that the fan indeed did run again. So we switched cars and headed for home.

Typically I don't like AC but for this trip I wanted a full load test so I ran it the whole way. The first 10 miles is in-town driving with lots of stop lights, traffic, etc. then about 40 miles of highway with only a few lights. About 20 miles in and while sitting at a light I saw the temp gauge hit 1/2 ( normal for Nancy is about 1 needle's below 1/2 ). I killed AC and cranked the heat for the remaining 20 miles - but only two stoplights to go. Sure enough, the fuse is gone again. This is fuse #2, a 40 amp FSX? FRX? - I forget. One of those rectangular ones with the removable cover.

So do any of you know of a common failure that likes to blow the radiator fan fuse? My first guess is that I just need a new fan motor, but I hate to shotgun these things.

Is the fan controller multi-speed or just an on-off switch i.e.; does it drive the fan with more current ( higher duty cycle ) when AC is on and ambient temp is high?

Don't know if wiring is consistent over different MYs, but according to FSM wiring is simple, no dedicated
thermostat, actuation of fan relay is determined by PCM instead.
So, unless the only wire going from the fuse box to the fan is contacting some ground, I'd say fan is dead.
Never had overheating issues as my KJ came with fan clutch, even though electric fan kicks in every now
and then.

Thank you for the information.

I'll check over all the wiring looking for an intermittent short. If I can't find anything obvious, I'll just spring for a new fan motor.

It's not very dead as the fuse will last for quite a while and the fan does run when it's needed. So far, so good on the current fuse about 60 miles later. Maybe if the fan motor gets too hot, its bushing seizes or something like that. But I'd think that 40 amps should be plenty to spin a fan.

OK, OK rollinglaugh.gif :happy175: about the 'it's not very dead...'. Yeah, maybe 'going South....' would be more appropriate!

I'm not dead yet.
Actually, I feel like going for a walk.
