How do you tell if front hubs are bad

02 sport 4x4 non-abs. I'm getting some louder than usual humming noise. I don't know if it's the tires, which are almost do for replacement, or if it could be a bad bearing/hub assembly. Is there a way to check them?

I am by no means the expert on this, but when my bearing went, it would get louder when turning one way versus the other way. Actually, in my case, turning in one direction (like getting onto an onramp) the sound would go away, then back straight it would get loud again. The sounds also gets louder with time but I find you don't realize just how loud it is, until one day you can't hear the radio.
