Hey all,

I was changing my oil out when I noticed the connectors for the e-rad fan were stuck together. After struggling for some time, I got it apart and found that some of the plastic around the pin was melted.

Also, I've found that the wires going to the fan are extremely hot while running.

This is really raising some flags for me.
The 30A fuse did not blow.

I really don't think this is normal.

Does your e-rad fan wires feel extremely hot when it's running???

Thanks for checking!
I'm suspecting the fan is an issue. I'll switch out both.

I already have them disconnected on the meantime.

No HD cooling here, just the fan man.:icon_lol:
Ran the Jeep for 6 minutes with AC on to engage Fan high speed.
It is only 58F outside but the connector & wires were not hot at all.

Something in your fan is causing a serious load! A new fan should fix that problem.

Are the fan blades hard to turn by hand? Kind of sounds like the motor may be drawing too much power, maybe due to the bearings going bad. If the blades don't turn freely, that's probably it.

the only load there would be the fan.
I did repair the frayed wires I found a few weeks ago, some internal damage must have happened.

Hot wires

Hot wires are due to something pulling too much current. Could be defective connectors - corroded or damaged. Could also be the fan motor bearings failing or internal wiring causing the motor to pull too much current. When wires start to melt the insulation, something is wrong! You are wise to disconnect until you find out what.

yeah. the next thing I have to do before the fan gets here is to check on the wiring harness.

Anyone know where I can get a replace 2 pin connector? I found a site that listed mopar connectors but didn't seem like they have the right one.

5 ohm for a ground wire okay?? This is measured from the e-rad fan connector, negative side to the -ve battery terminal.
Sounds pretty high for me.

From googling around, seems like a general number is <5ohms.

Thoughts?

okay. Just an update.
I spliced on a new connector that was melted.
Did some resistance test and voltage drop.
Wiring all seems fine.

My wires are still getting hot.

Any thoughts on that solid state relay? I find it hard to believe that, that might be a problem.

I'm really dull when it comes to electrical stuff - following your thread with interest. Sorry I can't offer any ideas

If you have the original fan relay it could be a issue.I'd swap it out for the updated MOPAR version only.

As far as e-fans go I have found the direct fit aftermarket versions to be far worse then the OE fans. They tend to draw much more amps then OE and never last as long.

I swapped in a aftermarket e-fan years ago and quickly yanked it and put back the OE fan.The OE fan(which was like 8 years old at the time) pulled close to 14amps while the brand new aftermarket fan was pulling 22 amps.Still run my original e-fan(no connector, straight wired to the relay) and the updated fan relay.

The fan relay is the updated MOPAR one.

I'll look in to the current draw.
Thanks for those numbers that I compare with.

The old one that I just swapped out was an aftermarket one for a year and never had an issue with melting the connector till recently.
I'm really lost for ideas now besides beefing up all the wires.

So my new fan is a Dorman 620-010.
Crazy that it pulls 19 amps according to their email replay back.

I should check mine. I put that same Dorman in a few months ago but never noticed any issues. I'll check the wiring tomorrow when I get to work. The old one still worked but the shroud was in rough shape and the screws connecting the fan to the shroud were roached.
