Hey everyone! I'm new to the forums and I need some help with this issue with an 05 Liberty. My wife & I are currently trying to sell her 00 Wrangler and bought this Liberty about a month ago. We love it except for one thing. When the vehicle starts moving, the doors lock, but when we stop and remove the key from the ignition, the doors don't automatically unlock. We have almost locked our 8 mo. old son in the car twice now. Each time, luckily one door was somehow unlocked. I have found condescending answers online of how to fix this. I plan on locating the manual and seeing if there is an answer in there when I have some time at home. Does anyone have an idea of how this can be fixed? Thanks for your help in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

That's the way the the locks work. It's Completely normal.

The
only adjustment for the locks i know about is for the keyfob. To set it either to open the doo all at once with single click or have it open driver door with one click then all others with quick 2nd click. but thats about it.

How did almost lock the kid in the KJ anyways? B/c despite the doors only auto lock. Once you turn the jeep off and open the door that door stays unlocked until you hit the lock button on the keyfob.Unless you lock the door manually before exiting out of the KJ then I can see how that could happen.

I have an '06 Liberty and it has the automatic locking function, but I have never heard of the doors automatically unlocking when you turn the ignition off. But when I open the driver's side door that unlocks and the rest of the doors stay locked. I feel like I've seen in the manual a way to disable the automatic locks so maybe there's a way to make them unlock? I have a copy of the manual on my computer so I will give it a perusal to see if I can find anything.

If you press the door lock switch while the keys are in the
ignition switch, and the driver’s door is open, the doors
will not lock.
The rear doors cannot be opened from inside the vehicle
until you pull up the lock plungers.
Automatic Door Locks — If Equipped
The doors will lock automatically if:
1. all doors are closed,
2. vehicle speed is above 15 mph (24 km/h),
3. and the accelerator pedal is depressed.
This will occur only once, will not reoccur until a door is
opened.
Child Protection Locks
The rear doors of your vehicle are equipped with child
protection locks. If you push up on the lever on the open
edge of the door it cannot be opened from the inside of
the vehicle. Push the lever down to disengage the child
protection locks.
WARNING!
Avoid trapping anyone in the vehicle in a collision.
Remember that the rear doors can only be opened
from the outside when the child protection locks are
engaged.

If you have the EVIC overhead computer you can choose to have only the driver's door unlock when you open the driver's door or have all the doors - including the tailgate - unlock when the driver's door is opened.

If you don't have the EVIC I believe there is still a way to choose whether just the driver's door or all doors unlock when the driver's door is opened. My Jeep isn't here or I'd check our manual...sorry.

In any case you are able to determine how your doors unlock - but they won't automatically unlock when you shut off the engine.

I appreciate the input all! I saw that if you have an EVIC, which I do not, you can adjust it that way. What I've read in other forums is that the only way it can be done is by having the dealer change it with the computer and it takes all of 30 sec. I'll give them a call and see if they are going to charge big for it.

Well you didn't supply me with a link, nor did you give me information. I know it's possible. I'm not looking for someone to tell me the obvious. I already know that they don't auto unlock, but know that they can. I'm looking for information on whether I can do it myself or have to have a dealer do it. Plus, learn some english.
