What is the difference between a 4x2 42RLE transmission and 4x4 42RLE? Can a 42RLE from a 4x4 be replaced with a 42RLE from a 4x2 Liberty? If yes, what has to be changed? Is there an extension housing on the 4x2 that can be removed to make room for the 4x4 transfer case? Or are the two transmissions different so that a 4x4 transmission can be replaced only by another transmission from a 4x4? Thanks for your help.

^^^^ That

The trannies themselves are the same but the tail is different on the 4X4 for the transfer case. Drop the tail section of your 4X2 and swap it for the tail section of the 4X4 ******.

I believe any Chrysler rear wheel drive vehicle that has the 42RLE transmission is suitable for the Liberty. Tom, Troy or anyone else confirm?

Experience?

Has anyone used a 4x2 transmission in a 4x4 Liberty? Please share your experience. What had to be changed on the 4x2 trans to covert to 4x4 trans (both 42RLE)? Thanks!

Just what TwoBobs stated above ,
the tail shaft has to come off and the tailshaft/ transfer case mounts on
Easy to find KJ 4X4 trasmissions
