OK so I have come to realize that the Liberty has the same adverse affects from a cowl area leak as the 2nd Gen Durangos have. On my -'04 Durango V8, the #7 coil gets light water ingestion and fowls the wire connection to the plug due to the Wiper cowl dripping water onto it. It obviously throws a 0307 CEL for #7 misfire. DiamlerChrysler had an ongoing recall for this but no longer does and I have to figure out a way to channel the water from dripping onto the coils.

Did the Liberty's ever have this recall? My '02 Renegade has the same drippage of water onto the #5 coil thus occasionally throw up the 0305 CEL code.

repairs?

On the Durango, there is a new cowl piece that Chrysler came out with that fixes the problem. Just go to your local dealer and ask them to order you one.

Does your Jeep have the weather stripping/rubber seal on bottom of cowl?
Pic shows it dotted in red.....

Maybe then try a new seal? My Kj is dry under hood/coil packs dry.
How else is water getting past this seal?

Only way I've seen moisture get to #5 coil in a KJ is from a coolant leak from the coolant tank since #5 coil sits right underneath that tank.

Don't know but it is definitely water and not coolant. I have to trace the cowl area once the weather breaks up here. It's dripping from somewhere and not directly above..

I was getting misfire codes. my o-rings were dry and the upper rubber seals o the coils were gone! Coil o rings are about $6 each. the upper rubber seal you cant buy.

I bought 6 new $7 coils on ebay just for the rubber parts. they fit just like the new factory ones.

Problem Solved!

The best thing to do for the health of the o rings is to put a light coating of dielectric grease on them before putting the coil pack back into the spark plug hole.

maybe, but bad o rings have to be replaced. if you dont have the upper seal, you have to put something up there too

I understand the O ring situation but the coils are brand new Mopar coils.. My question is why and where is the water actually coming from. It's a bit odd that this would happen. Like mentioned, Mopar did an update for the 2nd Gen Durango cowl becuase of this very leak.

You're the 1st I've ever heard of having this issue on a KJ that wasn't coolant related and I work on vehicles for a living and see alot of KJ's at work.
