2002/ 2001 3.7 4X4 AT 150k miles - I only have the Jeep 7 months - no history available.

Transmission clunks after passing gear is released At about 30mph and up (2wd mode).

Didnt do it when it was wintery cold but now that the weather is warming up the clunk is back.

I floor the car to speed up. the Trans shifts down then when I let up on the gas it shifts up, it clunks hard changing up gear.

I serviced the rear axle oil and all looks good. My UCA will be changed soon (not sure if the ball joint is the clunk). Rear U joint look solid too.

a trans service is due as soon as I decide to either do it myself or find a shop that really knows how to do it.

Is this a Jeep KJ thing and how should I go about it without firing the Parts Cannon??

This does not sound good.
Have a trans shop scan for any stored ****** codes firstly.
The friction modifiers do break down and only ATF+4 must be used.
With no history, how do you know for sure they even used ATF+4 ?
It will definitely shift poorly if the wrong fluid was used.
Pan drop, inspect for particles, & filters is a good idea, ASAP.
Trans fluid does work hard & I like to service trans every 40 k. The jeep likes that.
I also have an aluminum PML trans pan with drain plug.
The fluid can easily be drained in between services, & drain is a good idea if you ever get a trans temp light.
Fresh fluid is good fluid.
I assume you have the 45RFe?

^^ everything TC said

a 45RFE will shift hard as snot if the fluid is dirty.
start with a trans service and go from there. they(or you) can check mounts and such for you while they(or you) do the service. then you at least know exactly what fluid is in your trans and when it was serviced and can start a process of elimination if the problem persists

45rfe's have a spin on and a regular trans filter, get them from mopar/dealer some of the stuff AZ etc has is kind of dodgey, but feel free to save a few bucks and get your ATF+4 not from a dealership

dont think Wix's filter kit is more than 5 bucks less than mopars

I would use Mopar for sure.
See part #s 14 and 16 here.. https://www.moparpartsoverstock.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=882531&ukey_make=1097&ukey_model=15951&modelYear=2002&ukey_category=22704&ukey_driveLine=9303
The oval shaped filter for the 45RFE is... 05013470AE

The round one spins on (cooler return filter) 45RFE is 04799662

I would still call a local dealer to check them/ to see if there are any updated part numbers.

Did a filter & fluid service today on my AT.
the wet dipstick tube is making it hard to get a reading.

So how many Qts of AFT+4 should it take to refill it?

5 quarts for a pan drop.

Ok so I managed to find 2 empty 1 gallon oil containers.
refilled, I measured 6 qts in all.

maybe I got an extra quart because I had the front jacked up plus there was oil in the screw on filter.

a quick test drive and no more Clunk. I still have to wait for a test on the highway. I used castrol ATF+4. Autozun has a good sale except they ran out of oil at my store.

6 qts are ready to be recycled now :)

Like uss2defiant said I think the service manual says 5 quarts. I always do as you did and make sure it's full when I start, then measure what comes out and put that much new stuff in.

follow the owner's manual.
There's a min number of miles to drive before checking the fluid.
Also you'll need to cycle through all the gears and end in Park before checking the fluid.

don't think autozone can beat walmart's supertech price though....
what did you buy and how much was it?

Looks like you have a gasket there.
I think the 45rfe pan is ribbed on the ****** pan so RTV is suggested.

The shop that did my filters used both X.X

walmart's supertech is ~$4.30

who makes supertech ? How do I know if its good or good enough?
Ive done all that and am going for a highway drive tomorrow.

Ive been doing AT service (i cant write ****** service anymore?) for almost 40yrs. gasket & glue on pan side always unless there's an O-ring.

Looks like mopar did the last AT service with just Black RTV and it was starting to dissolve off the pan with a slight leak.:winner_third_h4h:
