02=heavier duty ****** (45RFE), 3/4 of an inch higher (pre-lowered)

06 will be 3/4 of an inch lower, have the 42RLE ****** wich is ok but not as heavy duty as the 02 ******), will have all the electronic stuff (ESC etc)

Go to jeep.com and under owners services put the vin# in and check for any open recalls. If both are at the jeep dealer get service records and build sheets. They should have at least have service records on the dealer owners wife's KJ.

Just some thoughts.

I am sure others will chime in.

Welcome to the forum.

I like 06's color, but if you can get 02 for a bit cheaper go for it.

Hard to say. What's the mileage (kilometerage??) and condition on each? What options? Which one looks better maintained, or has a cleaner history?

As Dave said, the 2002 will have a heavier duty trans if that matters.

I would disregard the pre-and-post lift arguement as both the 2002 and 2006 have surely sagged. The 2002 may or may not have ABS. The 2006 will have ABS - not sure which way you feel about it.

Well the 02 at least has some tires ...lol That's a tough call ... depends how you feel about all that electronic type stuff ESP ABS ETC. I would pick the 02 unless she has been abused.

2002 might have drum brakes
Can one upgrade to disk brakes?

2006 might also be "tighter" because when I drive 2005+ it just feels a lot different on the steering wheel, feels more precise and tight, same with suspension, it feels tighter & stiffer. I don't know about the case up there, but in the cold liberties do tend to work differently compared to warmer climates.

If there is a loan of any sort - 2006. Cash, 2002 1st look, 2006 2nd. My personal preference would be the 2006 but that's because I like mine. Some people like the looks of the 2002-2004 better. No preference here but I do like the newer tail lights.

I am not a fan of the ESP either but I hope it saves my life if I ever screw up bad enough to need it. The switch that turns it off really just turns off the traction control, the ESP still braking individual wheels when sideways. I believe it allows for more yaw, definitely when in 4WD high. 4WD low switches it off all of the way.

I think the ABS is excellent for day to day use but I could see it being a problem off road. It's a little more difficult to threshold brake with ABS but I have done it in winter weather.

I wonder about the brakes in the 2002. Disc/drum, no ABS?

The 2006 sure does look nice though. Those fog lights work pretty good.

Those Goodyear SR-As are toast. Even if they have tread.

A friend of mine went from a 99 Grand Cherokee with ABS to a 2002 KJ Limited with no ABS. He had a couple of minor rear enders getting adjusted to it. He drove that KJ for 7 years 197,000 miles and has a 2009 KK Limited now.

Hm, hard choice. Love the Khaki, but prefer the power train and the simpleness of the 02. Maybe one will sell, that'd do it. :D

As stated before, the 2002 probably has drums at the rear...they work but not as well as disks! I have drums and wish I had disks....better braking and easier to replace disk pads than drum shoes although park brake is better on drums.
The 2006 also has the newer grill etc. and the 2006 will probably have a better re-sell value sometime down the line.

As much as I hate to say this...

2002.

Seats are more comfortable, not like the '06, which isn't much different than sitting on a park bench.

Caveat emptor

Always watch out for demos and "dealer's wife" rides - not always babied the way you think they are... and the 06 is infamous for window regulators breaking.

I would go for the 02 (biased - I have one) just for the simplicity especially if it lacks rear discs and ABS, I have zero complaints on drums, they're reliable if taken care of and cleaned/adjusted from time to time and if you use the parking brake a lot less complications. If you're lifting no brake line modifications to do and non-abs hubs and brake parts are cheaper and easier. Not having TPMS on the tires is also a big money-saver and less hassle when changing tires.

Check the service records if you can, and visually inspect things known on the Liberty to have issues like ball joints, CV boots and under the hood get a close look at the radiator and hoses (my rad went just about that mileage) and power steering hoses and steering rack & it's bushings on the two huge bolts at the front bottom if you follow the serpentine belt / front fan peer straight down. Any bad corrosion or rubber bushings physically ripped up / sticking out should be easy to spot. If it has the original muffler check for cracks or rust especially at the seams - my original Mopar weakened with rust at the seam and was an easy victim on the trails. Also check for rust at the rear door glass or paint bubbles above or below that glass' hinges... just discovered that type of blemish recently.

As mentioned the tires may also be a selling point. The original Goodyear Wrangler SR-As on the 06 will have to go immediately - they're useless and actually dangerous in a Canadian winter.

I think you should put a little lower offer the 02 if paying cash as it's probably marked up a bit more based on mileage and average auction value in Canada IMO.

Good luck wheeling and dealing!

At the end of the day I'd go for the 2002 model.
Looks better, better transmission, doesn't have that ABS crap, seat are better.
If you are hell bent on rear disc brakes, you can always go to a wrecker and get
a newer rear diff.
131,000.0 Km don't really mean anything. Hell, ours has very close to 230,000.0 Km and it still drives sweet!

Are they both 4X4s, or just the '06?? That's a big deal IMO.

Go with the 06, it has four less Canadian Winters on it and that trumps everything, unlike BC and Alberta where salt is not used, one is too nice and the other is too cold for it to work in the Maritimes you will have salt and it has been at the brake lines, fuel lines and the underbody. It may look nice but beware. On the 02 look at the rear hatch under the third brake light, you probably have rust there.
