Not the mountains.
You can get around not having the upgraded upper control arms but getting the alignment right is so much easier and you don't have to worry about contact with the springs with the better uppers.

Budget lift and a quality lift are two different things most times in peoples eyes.
Depending on what your " auto parts stores" carry you may or may not be able to get quality parts from there. Most carry cheaper line of shocks which do not last as long.
OME, Ironman, Bilstein shocks,
OME or Ironman springs

I went with 3" of lift, stock UCA's and had zero problems with getting an alignment. Spring/UCA contact is another story. For just easy driving around the city there is no problems at all. Go over speed bumps or railroad tracks too fast and I get spring/uca contact every time. My kj is a mall crawler so far, have yet to take it wheeling, so it's not enough of a problem for me to spring for the JBA UCA's. But I am starting to get a click out of one of the ball joints up front now, so new ball joints are in my near future. Lifting these KJ's will speed up the wearing out of old suspension components so expect new UCA's somewhere down the line (upper ball joints are not serviceable - you have to replace the entire UCA to replace the upper ball joint). And when quality OEM uppers will run you $360, versus the higher quality REBUILDABLE UCA's from JBA for $400 - you might as well figure them into your costs..

I looked at it from a long term perspective. It's less money to just replace the ball joint itself and not the whole thing every time. The JBA uppers cost a bit initially but after that all you do is replace either the ball joint or the bushings and you don't get the spring contact like you will with the stock uppers. The ball joints on the JBA's are also have the grease fitting so they last longer.

If they are new uppers, then you should be ok for a while. Just be aware that when you lift KJ's there is far more stress put on the ball joints, causing them to wear much quicker. No way around it. The bigger question is whether you can live with spring/UCA contact. For daily driving around the city, it's probably more of an annoyance than anything. Mine make contact if I let the suspension droop too quickly (i.e. over speed bumps and curbs will do it every time). However if I drive moderately and slow down for bumps I can avoid the contact all together. But it's gets annoying having to modify my driving style to avoid it. If you offroad, even casually, spring/uca contact can get very annoying, if not distructive. Haven't heard of anyone actually damaging anything, but I can see it not being good for certain parts.

Basically it comes down to if you want to spend the $400 now, or a year or two or less down the road. Either way, it's an expense to plan for.

Bilstein are good shocks, Ironman and OME are a little better. Ironman are actually longer than all other fronts. Rest are all the same no matter who makes them, stock height or lifted
Everyone is saying "shocks" since we do not have a strut in front but a coilover shock. When you have struts there isn't any UCA which we also have
History lesson over for today:icon_lol:
