02 3.7 timing chains

Hi I’m new to the group. I have an 02 Liberty with 3.7. The timing chains either broke or one of the guides did. My question is, when this happens do the pistons usually hit the valves ? Don’t want to pull the heads if I don’t have to

It's a very good possibility. If you can get your hands on an endoscope (Amazon) you can pull the plugs and insert the scope and maybe see what's up.
