I just took delivery of a 2006 CRD with 75,000 miles on it. I bought the vehicle sight unseen (maybe dumb) but I'd really asked a lot of questions, and for the most part the dealer (Holt at DFW) was pretty honest. But, for one thing I've discovered.

I noticed some oil residue, on the tubes for the AC running along the top of the radiator housing, near the hood latch, and thought what a strange place for crankcase oil...so I looked around, and then looked up under the hood, and the insulation blanket was soaked with oil. My theory is that at some point the vehicle was driven with the oil fill cap missing.

My question is two fold, does anyone think enough oil was lost, that there was damage to the engine? And secondly, how could one tell if there was damage to the engine?

It seems to start fine, though never have seen the glow plug light come on at all, turns over more than my 2003 VW TDI did before starting, but runs strong, and sounds for the most part "normal" but for a slight clicking and sounds to be once every revolution as opposed to once every cylinder fires.

Thanks much...

Welcome to the forum!

PS: I don't have a CRD, so I can't help you there. Sorry!

The oil leak may have come from leaking CAC hoses...the thick black hoses coming from the turbo to the Intercooler up front and back to the inlet manifold.
OEM hoses are known to become porous and leak oil before splitting...check your hoses and if need be replace them with silicone SAMCO ones.

The light for the glowplugs comes on only for a few seconds...easy to miss.
If you had a glowplug problem you would get a CEL for it.

74 Ghia, just my thought, when ever there is concern for a motor's condition the first place to start is with a compression check. I have an 05 CRD but I'm sorry I don't have the numbers to give you , maybe someone has good compression specs!
