Anyone else notice the noise level of the valvetrain in the 3.7L to be a little louder than alot of other engines?

Jeeps always had noisier engines. I don't know why.

My 4.0L weren't this noisy I don't think. Been a while though. I have been driving the wife's Pacifica a lot lately and sure do notice the difference in valvetrain noise between the two, inside and out. Just guess I am getting picky in my old age. lol

The 4.0L was most certainly noisy too. :)

The 3.7L is also noisy.

Tis a Jeep thing. I believe part of the issue is the timing chain. Those can be pretty loud.

I just started to say, on a cold morning the 4.0 can sound like a damn diesel.....but they sure are some strong motors :)

My 3.7 sounds a bit noisy when first cranked up....especially if it's been a couple of days since i've driven it, and all the oil has had a chance to drain down. Give it a minute or so and she's good to go :)

Mine is realatively quite compared to other cars I test drove and own. My Audi A4 1.8Turbo is pretty noisy. The Nissan Altima I drove was horribly noisy.(blarg) The Jeep is nice a quiet to me, until you get it up into the upper revs, which I try to avoid. I get no valvtrain noise as far as sticky lifters and ticking goes.

The 3.7 in the Jeep is too noisy. I had an 06 Durango with the 3.7 and it was very quiet. My 07 Sport with the 6 speed is noisy enough that I will never look at Jeeps for future vehicles. I think that Jeep must have decided to make it noisier so that it would be more Jeep like. They could have made the vehicle smooth if they wanted to.

This Christmas I'm going to see about insulating the interior of the jeep with some insulating material. I'm annoyed that I'm going to have to do this much work to make an expensive vehicle into a liveable daily driver. It should have been right from the factory.

Well the Durango is more expensive and is more luxurious than the barebones Jeep. It probably had more noise insulation. The engines sound the same regardless of the vehicle they're installed in. Also, the Durango was designed for larger engines, so there's more space around the engine which may make the engine sound quieter.

But I will say, for some reason the Dodge 3.7L sounds like a "Dodge" starting up while the Jeep 3.7L sounds like a "Jeep" starting up. Probably has a lot to do with the parts that are around the engine and of course programming. But when they run, they're pretty much the same.

Regarding the startup sound, anyone who has had a Dodge 4.7L or 3.7L and a Jeep 4.7L or 3.7L knows what I'm talking about.

I am selling my jeep because it makes clicky noise when you put on the signal.

I know that the Durango was a more expensive vehicle, but Jeep could have put another $20 worth of sound deadening in the jeep. They made my jeep and put a $22000 price tag on it. I would expect that at that price if there is not enough sound insulation then that was a decision made by jeep. I've had cars that cost half the price that were quieter and smoother running.

And Jeepster, what's wrong with disliking a vehicle because it's too noisy. Being too noisy is the only thing that I don't care for. I expect that they made my Sport model noisy in order to push people to the higher priced Limited models.

There are always going to be differences. Why is a W-Body Buick quieter than a W-Body Grand Prix? Because that's what it's made to do.

The KJ is supposed to be a lower-level SUV for Jeep. The GC is the one that's supposedly luxurious.

In any manufacturer and any car line I think you'll fine the same thing. A 5 series BMW will be more insulated than a 3 series, etc.

If the 3.7L has valve train problems, then please explain all the happy Liberty owners I get at work? (Valet)

Lady: "Ooh, PLEASE take care of my Liberty. I just got it and I LOVE this thing."

I watch as she slips me a $5 bill.

Me: "Yes, ma'am. :)"

I just do not think the liberty is loud at all. Just b/c a lower level car is quieter does not mean the liberty is going to be quite. Its a JEEP. Its made to go offroad, its ride is crude, the drivetrain is crude(at least mine it, it clunks like crazy), and the engine is crude. Out of 4 of our Jeeps, my liberty is one of the quietest and they all cost about the same besides my moms jeep which is the quietest of them all and it has a Hemi. Im not saying that I dont like the way my Jeep sounds or rides, I actually love everything about it.

What it boils down too, Jeep is not known to have quiet engines, they are known for their offroad ability and their toughness.

Now go get in your liberty, go through a drive-thru so the sound bounces back, and smile that you have a Jeep that sounds as good as it does. :D
