I never did finish this thread off -- The overheating was from a broken plastic impeller on the water pump. I found an almost brand new one at the junkyard, and 6 or 7 bolts later, she was back on the road. -Al.

My shaved-down grease fitting replacement for the ball stud is still holding strong after a year and half. (See Link in post above) For what I expected to just be a temporary fix that I'd have to go over with JB Weld or something, I'm incredibly happy with how it turned out. -Al.
