So are these for summer off-road vehicles only? Would they hamper the performance of a vehicle in the winter? They look cool enough to serve a purpose.

Once you cut holes in the hood they are there to stay so all the time.
I ran Pontiac GTP hood louvers in my XJ and my 04 for years with no issues. Troy has ran louvers in his KJ for years as well.
Placement is the key. They do in fact serve a purpose if installed right, NOT facing forward like that one photo ( first one and those are ugly )

Good find Myke, I too would like to do like this,but didn't want to spenr as much. Tom, tell us more about proper placement. I'd imagine you wouldn't want them directly about coils, but between the open area between engine and inner fender above exhaust manifolds. Do they actually make much of a difference?

Have to find some pics of where I had the GTP hood louvers, they worked great
Now a buddy had ones like Troys, always had issues with water running down onto the coils

I'd use the #60 , with them angled would look best on a KJ hood , like I have mine installed on the 04

They are a functioning ram air intake. He custom built an intake to butt up against the underside of the hood where the vent is.

You run them year round. Some people build drip trays under them, others just run them where they look best.

Best placement also depends on what you're looking to do. If you put them in a high pressure zone you can cause air to get forced into the engine bay which may screw up the flow coming through your radiator. This setup works best for slow speed cooling. If you want them to cool better at high speed then you want them in a low pressure zone so the air in the engine bay gets sucked out of them.

Installed the vents. Intake temp is lower and you can feel hot air coming from the mech and elec fan.

This position is much more functional while moving.

Looks great! I would like to do this to my KJ, but I'm not sure how they would go in deep water. I sometimes have to cross water and it goes over the bonnet (hood). Water pouring into the top of the engine might not be ideal.

Just pop the hood and hold a hose over where you would put the vents. ;)


Liquid electrical tape and dielectric grease is good for preventive measures.

I had mine throwing water up over the hood, ( water over the headlights ) with the Pontiac GTP hood louvers and no issues, just keep moving

Those are different but I'm digging them. I definitely noticed a difference with mine during the summer. My a/c put out colder air after having them. It's also cool to see all the hot air coming out of them during the winter.

I have noticed my intake temps are ~105-135 and before they were always 150+ and coolant temps are 205-215 before they were always 215-223

Ok, I set myself up for that one. If you could post a couple pictures of the setup you had on your KJ it would be most appreciated. With the engine swap I'm planning a little extra air flow would be quite beneficial.
