Hi everyone,
Had a transmission temp warning pop up today when I was out in the jeep. It was about 80 degrees out, I was on the back roads and going from crawling to 20 mph. I think it was from the transmission shifting up and down but I’m not sure. I was only about 10 miles on the back roads when it popped up. I turned off the engine, let it sit for a minute and turned back and no warning light.

I checked the transmission lines to see if they were leaking or damaged and didn’t see anything. Drove back home (about 40 miles) and no warning light came on. Seems to be driving fine.

Should I drop the pan and see if there might be metal pieces? Transmission fluid has always been changed early and flushed by the dealer.

I know I have read the radiator for the transmission doesn’t do a good job, I also have a ARB bumper, and wondered if that might be hindering some of the airflow. Any recommendations on a better transmission cooler?

Any other recommendations or areas I should look into?

-2005 Jeep renegade w/ hd fan
-ARB bumper
-94k miles

Thanks!

Ive had my transmission temp light come on once. I was driving through sand dunes at high revs for an extended period. I stopped, let it cool then I was on my way again with no warning light. I changed the transmission fluid soon after. It looked pretty burnt and nasty, so id recommend changing the transmission fluid on your Jeep, too.

I ran an ARB for years with no issues, what gear were you in? At that speed kick off the OD and run in 2nd or so, going to slow in higher gears and 4 hi will do that

Thanks for the reply, I will do that. What puzzled me was the fact I didn’t think I was working it hard. I wasn’t in 4wd and wasn’t driving it hard. Only thing I could think of that helped cause it would be the shifting up and down from getting up to speed then having to nearly stop for the crater like potholes.

I was just in drive. Do you think that the stop and go could have caused it? I wasn’t in 4wd and o/d wasn’t off.

Are you running any aftermarket transmission cooler?

I would suggest upgrading to the Mopar severe duty cooler and also the addition of the in radiator cooler found on the 2002 to 2003 liberties. The you could also plumb in line a Darele transmission thermostat.

I was just reading some posts on that. So if I understand it right, replace the radiator that is in there now with 02-03 radiator that has the ****** cooler built in, then add the severe duty cooler as a aux cooler. Is that correct?

Did you have it in 4lo or manually shifted to 2nd gear?

The extra gear reduction keeps your revs higher, improves cooling, and less torque converter slip.

Anytime you get the Trans Temp light is an indication of fluid getting overheated & time to drain & refill with new filter ASAP.
When was the last time you serviced the trans?
I use a PML 42RLE aluminum pan now, which has the drain plug, makes it easy to drain/refill.
It holds a bit more ATF+4 and seems to keep things cooler as well.

I’ll get that done. I have always had the dealer do it early, the last flush was roughly at 84k if I remember correct. I bought it with 42k and had it flushed at 48k then at the 84k. I’ve seen that pan and it was on my list of “soon to buys”, my trans pan has been starting to rust on the outside.

How are you monitoring the transmission temp? ObdII gauge? Any recommendations on one?

Should it be flushed or would it be fine to just replace the fluid and filter?

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Off road + slow speeds + hilly terrain(or sand) = 4low

More so if you have the 42RLE trans.

The extra gear reduction keeps the engine revs up(better cooling) while reducing the load on the engine.

In Colorado the KJ's with the 42RLE would often get the trans over temp light going to the trail and the highway. Not one KJ with the 45RFE ever had that issue.

I'm not monitoring the trans temp, have not needed to since installing the pan, never got another trans temp light since.
PML can machine on the side for the temp sensor which would then have it's own separate electrical gauge.
PML can advise further on the machining & or have a sensor installed I suppose?

Keeping the ****** in a lower gear is the best thing to do. Ive never seen a temp light with my 04 and I always limit it to a lower gear; even in traffic. So far its not gotten over 210F, even when towing a ~3,000lb trailer in hilly terrain/in the city when its 90F out.

If you plan on offroading much, the biggest cooler that you can fit up front would be a huge help. The 02 rad would be the next step.

Whats this mopar severe duty cooler? Ive not heard of it.

Another tid bit, you should always stop and leave it running in N if the light comes on. Dont just shut it off.

The severe duty transmission oil cooler is part number 5191979AA, Here is the link to the radiator that I have https://www.ebay.com/itm/56mm-alumi...y:3.7L&hash=item3ae0c21f17:g:RaYAAOSwzqFY9xvH
The transmission thermostat That I have is https://derale.com/products/fluid-c...teel-standard-rotation-flex-fan-chrome-detail
I know its a lot of money to upgrade, but it is 100% worth it to add more engine cooling and also to increase and to control the transmission cooling.

I would have thought keeping the transmission in the high rev range would cause it to overheat? Or do I have it backwards?

NO NO NO!

The book says, and this happened to me not long ago, when the light comes on, put it in neutral and hold a rev slightly above idle, the light goes out in 20 seconds or so, mine never came back on.....

I used to have the same issue. I only upgraded the radiator with a 2002 radiator with the in radiator transmission cooler then looped it back out to the external cooler. I did not purchase the bigger external cooler (although it would be better) because after that, I monitored the transmission temp, and it was OK, even when off-roading during summer.
renegade 04 and tjkj2002 :hail: where kind to provide me with all the info i needed and since then, everything is fine, no temp issues :winner_third_h4h:

The reason why I upgraded to the degree that I did was due to the fact that I was normally towing close to or even over the tow rating of the liberty, and I also upgraded to rid my jeep of cheap plastic tank radiators for good. Just a fyi that 180F is operating temperature and 200F is when the fluid starts to degrade and seals in the transmission begin to harden.
