I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty. I keep getting a GASCAP message displayed on my odometer panel and an audible ding. I ordered a new MOPAR gas cap and I continue to get the audible tone and message.

What do I do now??

Do like I did and disconnect then reconnect the battery, resets the computer for a few days which gets rid of the annoying ding...Hehe

Actually, same deal here which means there is a leak in the EVAP system. Someone suggested I check the lines at the top of the fuel tanK for a leak (everything else in the engine compartment seems ok.)

Thanks Paul. Great idea!!

Did it solve the problem or do you have a leak in the EVAP system??

Don't laugh but I've been running around with this thing intermittently going on and off for a few months. Annoying but no poor running conditions. Had planned to check the fuel tank lines this evening. Will let you know.

Another thought I had (read it somewhere on the Forum) was (on the 2007 anyway) the smallish canister near the battery may be faulty. It has two vac lines running into it...might be worth swapping out.

That "gas cap" message is for a EVAP very small leak and is the hardest leak to find. This is were a smoke machine comes in very handy and a wiring diagram also since you will need to power and/or ground the purge solenoid and other evap system solenoids.

Exactly why I haven't found it yet...more EVAP stuff routed around than you can shake a smoke machine. I did notice from the tank a small canister up under the body, possibly another obscure failed part. Finding this micro-leak may prove difficult. I'll look into the solenoids as a source...thanks for the tip.

From all the KJ's I've diagnosed for small EVAP leaks has either been that little hose coming off the charcoal canister or the NLD pump.

UPDATE: After fiddling around for a few months with a "Gascap" error I bit the bullet and bought a replacement Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid (CP648 - Standard Brand)...problem solved. Takes two minutes to replace. Maybe didn't need a new filler cap after all, but hey, after 120K miles nice to have a new one that clicks real nice.

Another Update:

Despite replacing the Gas Cap and Purge Solenoid - which for some reason worked for a while - the GASCAP error came back with a vengeance. Finally crawled under the back end, removed the EVAP canister (ok, who's idea was it to put this thing back there up above the axle??). Finally got the canister out...hoses seemed fine, cable looked fine. What I found after removing the white EVAP solenoid (or is it the NLD Pump??) - it twists off - was that one of the connector contacts had corroded away in the gap between the connector housing and the solenoid housing, hence a fault whenever the PCM did an EVAP test (no power to the solenoid). A Dremel and soldering iron made the repair to the contact, now no error (crossing my fingers tho). Pretty obscure failure, but beat buying a new canister for $90.

When I had this same issue. I replaced the gas cap twice, that was not it, then I replaced the Purge Sensor/Purge Solenoid. That worked for a short time but finally in the end. I had to replace the Fuel Purge Pump that was my fix, for this issue.

Same here...exactly what I did.

BTW, where is the Purge Pump located? I'm assuming it's the white plastic assy attached to the EVAP canister that had the failed contact on mine, or is it another component elsewhere in the EVAP system spaghetti?

The fuel purge pump. True name is called ( the fuel vapor leak detection pump). It is located on the outer backside of the gas tank in the middle closest to the top across from the EVAP canister.

Thanks...am thinking on the 2007 it's the module attached to the EVAP canister. So far no GASCAP error msg with the most recent repair.
