I also used a flat head, it works, If you break the red tab it should still be OK, although I am sure it serves a purpose to avoid shorts, etc.. but pull it hard, it should come off, unless it was fried and somehow fused? fiddle it up and down, sideways, etc..

I'm taking it to my buddy tomorrow who's a mechanic to let him try. I mean I tried with both hands and couldn't get it out and I'm a pretty stout guy. I'll try again in the morning and see if I can get it.

I have to go over there anyway for him to change out the high pressure switch on my a/c and get my power steering pump changed.

I just used a small flathead and did, indeed, break a little plastic. The pieces still fit plenty snug, and I highly doubt they will ever jiggle loose.

Gently pry up on the tab with a flat head screwdriver, then use a pair of needle nose pliers to grab the plug; pull and wiggle gently and it will come out no problem. Had to do it today.

I found that pulling the red tab completely out then using the flat head from the back is what did the trick for me...Awesome and quick fix...thanks KJ Country!

I just replaced my wife's resistor in her 02 KJ two minutes ago and it was easy as pie! The only thing that trouble me was red clip (which I didn't break by the way :) ) and the plug was a bit hard to pull out but once I got the plug out it was breeze and she's happy .

A little tip for red clip. Use a medium to large size flat head. stick the screw driver up from under the dash and when you pull on the screw driver use two hands and pull straight towards the seat instead of trying to use the flat head to pry it out and pulling on the flat head at an angle and then it popped right out.

(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

(2) Open the glove box door to gain access to the
blower motor resistor.
(3) Pull out the lock on the blower motor resistor
wire harness connector to unlock the connector latch.
(4) Depress the latch on the blower motor resistor
wire harness connector and unplug the connector
from the resistor.
(5) Remove the two screws that secure the resistor
to the HVAC housing.
(6) Remove the resistor from the HVAC housing.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install the new resistor in the HVAC housing.
(2) Install the two screws that secure the resistor
to the HVAC housing and tighten to 2.2 N·m (20 in.
lbs.).
(3) Plug in the blower motor harness connector.
(4) Push in the lock on the blower motor resistor
harness connector.
(5) Close the glove box door.
(6) Connect the battery negative cable.

Thank you very much. I had called auto shop and had been quoted $380 -$460 to make repairs to heat. For $22 and 47 minutes start to finish including travel time to advance blower working all speeds.
I am very grateful for this info and grateful that people will speak up and share info. I saved hundreds of $$$$.
Thank you.

Have a 2008 Liberty LTD. I have checked the coolant level (it's good), no bad fuses and I have no heat/air regardless of which setting. However, I do hear some noise between the dash and glovebox when I try and adjust the strength of the air output. I also have a "Error" displaying in place of the odometer. Any thoughts??? Any help appreciated.

I have an '06 Liberty. My fan works on 4 (high) only, not at all on 1, 2, or 3. I thought it was the blower fan resistor that needed replaced. The dealership says I need a new blower also-an additional $200 expense. Are they being truthful with me? The blower still works on high. What would you recommend?

If the blower works on high then it works. The resister needs to be changed. Cheap and easy to do yourself. Welcome to the forum.

Hey guys, just read through this whole thread, some very good info.

I have a bit of a different situation. The Liberty belongs to my parents and they live a good 2 hours away. My sister's boyfriend (very handy guy, especially with electronics) swapped out the resistor and the fan worked normally again...for TWO MINUTES! After that the new resistor MELTED.

What on Earth could cause that? Incorrect fuse somewhere? Any help is appreciated!

A big thank you to everyone in this thread. I just replaced my blower resistor using the instructions in this thread...I'm not terribly handy around cars but I managed to do it in an hour, including the trip to and from the dealer to get the part, cost me $25 or so. Blower works like it should now and I feel a great sense of accomplishment having fixed something on my Jeep and saving a ton of money :)

Great instruction, replaced my blower resistor just in time for foggy/icy windshields...only flaw was that I destroyed the"keeper" for the plug, but it seems very snug..oh well...

Lost 1 on our 02. 2, 3, and 4 still work. Might wait a while two replace it. But now I know how to do it. Thanks to all for the helpful tips.

On my 04 I don't believe #1 ever worked, unless it's real slow and I just couldn't hear it. However, I have been driving it more lately (usually the wife's ride) and noticed that #4 was not working, but #2 and #3 speeds were. But now I have nothing on any of them..

I thought #4 would work no matter what - so before I spend the money on a new resistor board, is there something else I should check first, I don't have an OM for this, so which fuse should I check?

Thanks very much, read this an ordered the resistor from the states, it arrived 3 days ago and just fitted to my Cherokee (Liberty's UK name) in 10 minutes after I had searched how to drop the glove box lid off (push side clips in, drop down, slide to the left and remove) one well Jeep outside Cambridge UK with some working heating fan speeds again!!
