When I tow my trailer (for 2 snowmobiles so about 2000 lbs) and see a big hill in front of me, I hit the O/D off switch, then the jeep go into the 3rd gear, revs up and 2-3 second later the RPM drops and I loose my power just like it comes back to O/D but doesn't seem to shift. If I hit the O/D switch again (turn O/D on), then the jeep shift into O/D. I was searching the answer in my owners manual and saw this :

A feature designed to improve fuel economy has been
added to the automatic transmission of this vehicle. A
clutch within the torque converter engages automatically
at calibrated speeds. This may result in a slightly different
feeling or response during normal operation in high
gear. When the vehicle speed drops or during acceleration,
the clutch automatically and smoothly disengages.

IS there anything that I can do to stay at higher RPM in 3rd gear when I turn the O/D off ? I own a 2002 KJ V6 3,7L 4x4

I don't know but when I search 42RLE in wikipedia, it says that 42RLE appears in the 2003.5+ Liberty models so I think I have the 45RFE with selec trac

Sounds like it's just the lockup clutch in the TC. If you push the gas a little harder (not alot) it should back out of lockup. If you press too hard you'll pop it down a gear. I don't know if it works for KJ's, but someone did a 45 to 545 conversion on a WJ by changing TCM (turns the 4sp int a 5sp with a programming change). I have the 545RFE in my Ram, not a bad trans other than its ability to suck up horsepower/not withstand excess amounts of torque.
