Why?

I'm assuming this is some sort of counterweight. Why is this on the diff, and what purpose does it serve?

It's there to counter any minor rear driveline vibrations,I've had mine off for about 10,000 miles(and a few wheeling trips) and no difference felt and I'm lifted.

The parts manual identifies it as an axle damper
