What is green that could be leaking from my KJ?

Hello Everyone

On two occassions now, I have noticed green spots in the snow when driving my 03 KJ in deep snow (6" - 12")...

My first thought was an A/C leak... when the condensor cracked on my Saturn, there was green dye that leaked all over the place.

But in this situation, I have only seen evidence of the green stuff when snow is deep enough to hit the driveline/chassis... I have seen no puddles in the driveway, even after long periods of sitting.

When I did an oil change last weekend, the only thing I noticed was the front diff input shaft seal area is wet. Not dripping or anything, just wet from seeping. I've never seen bright green gear oil!!

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,
Tom

What about grease from the drive shaft? I've seen greases in varying shades from yellows to greens to blues. Grease would explain seeing the spots only when the snow comes in contact with the components.

Just a thought, I'm no mechanic by any means.

it could be grease
I have seen red grease ,this is what I use
I have only seen green grease once and it was a military spec grease
not for public sale ,some how I got a case might have to do with the fact that
I did some work where they produced and packaged the stuff

I don't think grease would leave spots, I don't think it would rub off on snow either. Sounds like anti freeze to me, have you ever changed it or have somebody else do it. When my moms freeze plugs started to go on her car it would leave just a couple of drops on the floor after the car was turned off. After the car was turned off there was no pressure to make it leak. But I'm no expert, just a thought.

oh
my money is still on coolant, someone flushed and filled with green, hopefully they did a nice flush so you dont have coolant mix.

the reason it is covering the diff area is the slow drip probably from back running down the block. have you checked coolant in awhile? find out how low you are, then clean the engine and track the leak back. was the top end rebuilt or worked on?

I thought grease too, but he makes it sound like it's bright green. Isn't CV grease dark green?

Ah, didn't realize it was that light. A friend exploded his on a modified GTP and I had the luxury of helping him fix it. It looked dark - could have been a different grease, or contaminated grease.

I agree on the difficult to get off, it was EVERYWHERE on a white car!

Each company has a different color for some reason, seen light green, dark green, blue, red, and black CV grease.

I just did a brake job on a JK that had blown seals on the rear axle, and leaking dif fluid into the brake housing. It was a dark green after being mixed with brake dust, and sand. Have you checked the axle seals to see if they are clean?

This JK has been submerged in water above the axles numerous times, and sees a lot of beach and sand action. Needless to say, it's been driven like a Jeep.

not sure what it could be but alot of vehicle do that. My caravan did it, my neighbors Sunfire does it and so does my KJ.
Nothing leaks...it just happens. Maybe the salt react with the heat of the exhaust or something...who knows.

Green fluid could possibly be windshield wiper fluid.....I know that in cold weather the seals on my subarus windshield fluid resevoir will leak a bit.

Thanks for all of the advice and ideas! I've seen it two more times since my original post, but I still don't know what it is. The last time I seen it, I was out on the river ice fishing and the green stuff had a chance to freeze, so that seems to be ruling out oil... Perhaps I'll taste it next time :p

Still no puddles in the driveway or obvious drips underneath, so I'm not going to worry too much. Coolant is pink, so is the washer fluid!

Thanks,
Tom

If it froze then its mostly likely nothing from the Jeep. Oil, antifreeze, washer fluid, grease, none of that would freeze unless it was insanely cold.

Would love to have that happen so I could figure it out.. We dont get snow that deep though.. :(

I still stand behind my theory since it's happens to other vehicles too... especially that the vehicles I've seen do not have any green fluids in it.... :D

I'm not going to worry about it, can't be anything too serious!

Now, the big orange puddle I just found in the driveway, that is another story! I took the serpentine belt off, the water pump pulley wobbles around quite nicely :p I'm still in the 7/115K warranty, so I hope it is just my $100 deductible...
