I have an 02 liberty, and recently been having trans issues. the trans shifts normally into 2nd, but as soon as its about to go into 3rd, it slips and feels like its in neutral until i slow down to 20 mph. I can not go over about 25, otherwise it slips and goes no where.

a friend was able to pull trans codes and found p0700 in the ecm and found p0733, p0734, p1790, and p01793. i looked up the codes and what they mean, just not sure what needs to be tested or service or replaced. He thinks the trans needs to be replaced or overhauled.

the truck has 180,000 and is bone stock. never done any upgrades.

any information would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Those codes are telling you that the clutch packs are not able to engage properly into both 3rd and 4th (overdrive.)

Take the truck to a reputable transmission shop and ask them to drive it and put it on their ****** scanner (not the same as a scan tool used for other mechanical issues.) Even more specifically ask to see the CVI numbers (Clutch Volume Index) when they create the report. I have a feeling your CVIs for 3rd and OD are out of range (indicated by the 793/794 codes) - which usually means a rebuild or replacement. The other two codes are essentially saying that you have a problem with 3rd and OD - which the first two codes already told you.

Not unusual in a ****** with 180,000 miles on it and may or may not have been prevented with more frequent maintenance. In any case, you got your money's worth out of your 02's ****** - a rebuild or replacement will make it like new again.

Pull the pan and check the valve body side plate as they tend to blow off the valve body and you loose 3rd and 4th gears. The dealership has a HD replacement for like $25.

This. Happened to me a couple of years back. Went with the TransGo shift kit... and it's been great ever since.

Hey guys, just pulling this one from the grave. As some of you may remember, I've had some transmission problems that I've actually attributed to the torque converter. Well, today I took it to my transmission guy, who took it for a test drive with me. We were able to get it to do the normal shimmying and clunking. But it also slipped out of fourth and threw us a code! (Lucky for me this happened while on the test drive!!!) We got (I think I remember this right) a P0734 code. That's the code for a 4th gear shift error (Gear Ratio Error). He pulled the CVIs as well, and he saw that the numbers for 4th gear and UD (probably unrelated???) were out of range. So with that...using all of your collective knowledge...is it time for a rebuild (or used swap)? Or are there one or two parts that I can replace that might help me out here? I doubt it, but I figured I would ask. He's going to pick the Jeep up next week and check the pan for any sort of debris from the clutches. I'm absolutely prepared for the worst, and already AT shopping AS WELL AS used car shopping... :(

I think you're wise to be prepped for a rebuild or "new/used" ******. Once the clutch packs are worn you're at the crossroads where the labor cost to pull the ****** & fix the clutch packs is about where you'd be with pulling the current ****** and replacing it with a new/old one.

For what it's worth, a newer used vehicle or new one is generally more expensive than repairing your current vehicle. By the time you make a down payment, finance the new one, etc. you've spent more than you would repairing the Jeep. My .02 cents...

I agree with Two Bob's here.
It's much more economical to replace the transmission with a rebuilt unit than it is to go out and purchase a new (too you) vehicle.
Jen and I were in the same boat not to long ago.
Considering the amount of money that we've spent on upgrades on our Jeep...

True. But my considerations were the fact that I don't have any real mechanical upgrades in it, I need tires, rotors, and a couple of CV joints. I don't know...I'm probably going to get her repaired because the engine has so much life left in it (there's only 83k on it...). But I figured I'd get all of your advice. I really do value everything each and every one of you have to say. :)

Oh and Ry/Jen - did you get a used ****** or have yours rebuilt? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you abouts?

Be sure they use ATF+4 if they rebuild it, and have them add some Lube Guard
