while in 4x full. Backing out of my driveway, the rear wheels hit a patch of ice/snow and the wheels began spinning. The front tires were on dry pavement. I put the Jeep in 4x fulltime and it acted like the Liberty was still in 2x.

4x4 or 4FT is
1) not engaged immediately, so if you put it just before you pulled out it needs a few revolutions of the gears to engage
2) does not lock all four wheels, so it is normal for rear wheels to spin, but not too much. It should still be able to pull you through, it is normal to spin a bit especially if you do not have ESP.
3) on ICE you should use 4PT or 4HI, it locks all 4 wheels.

it is recommended that you switch 4x4 modes or between 2x4 and 4x4 while moving.

Normal. Full-time does not lock the front and rear wheels together. It just allows torque to be split between the two. O:)

Part-time locks the front and rear together. \:D/
