Hello everyone, my speedometer is working intermittently. I've done my fair of reading and I know the speed sensor sits on top of the differential. The thing is, I changed it, and it still works intermittently.

Here is the deal: the car will throw a check engine light with code p0500 (speed sensor) when I get the underside of the car WET. I can get the check engine light cleared and everything will be fine, until I go through a car-wash or get the underneath of the car wet. Doing more reading I see that it is common for the wire going to the speed sensor to be damaged, which would explain it shorting out when it gets wet. I inspected the wire near the differential and did not see any exposed wires.

Is there a part number for the wire itself that goes to the speed sensor? I'm trying to see how I could get it replaced. So far I can only find the wires to the front abs sensors, which I don't believe would help me. I'd like to take it to the dealer to get it replaced but I don't want to overpay. I would appreciate any input!

What year/model is your KJ?

The cable normally frays on the emergency brake lines I believe and there are posts where the actual connector has a fault...wires are not crimped in properly. The 2005 KJs have a recall issued in that they put in the wrong rear diff oil at the factory and this oil chews up the sensors...the fix is to drain the old oil, clean out the diff and replace the sensor. So if yours is a 2005 model and the diff oil has not been changed then bear this in mind!

Hello again, could you tell me at what point in the length of the speed sensor wire it comes in contact with the parking brake line? I peeked close to the differential and did not see anything.

It's since snowed and the car's covered with snow, and it's crazy cold for me to get under there for a few more days or more.

I do not have an answer to your question...merely repeating what I have read on several forums. My 2002 CRD does not have the sensor cable come anywhere near to the parking brake cable but it is an Export model, RHD and has brake drums at the rear..not disks.

You will need to trace along the whole section of wiring to see any fraying of the cable I am afraid.:disgust:
