Hey everyone!

I am planning on buying a used suv in the fall and the jeep liberty is seems to be the best bet. I want a vehicle that can carry a fair amount of cargo and has good 4x4 to get me out of any difficulty I may find myself in. I am not planning on doing any off-roading, but a muddy field or some snow is not out of the question.

I was looking at a 2003 Honda Pilot, but after talking to some people, found out they have some transmission problems. I am planning on spending around $10K, so it will probably have 80K to 100K miles on it. So I have some questions about the liberty.

1.- First off, I am NOT buying the JK for the gas mileage. However I am wondering what kinda of overall mileage people are getting?

2.- How do the breaks feel in terms of stoping distance and is the petal short or long throw?

3.- A 3.7L V6 sound fairly large, but I am wondering about passing power on the highway. Many SUVs have a lot of wind resistance and are slow to pass.

4.- Anything I should know about buying a KJ with that many miles on it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks,

Geoffrey

Welcome!!!

Most will report about 15-18 in the city stock (bit less if lifted/larger tires), and over 20 (23 even) on the highway. Brakes are pretty strong, I feel the stopping distance is pretty short. Passing power is fine, it's not a racer, but it has some get go when needed. Nothing really to watch out for other than the usual stuff that goes with anything. Check to see if the UBJ recall was done.

1) You mean KJ? Yeah I generally average about 18-19 no matter what I do in the Jeep.

2) Brakes are OK. I actually need new rotors and I STILL think the stopping power is fine.

3) The 3.7 outputs PLENTY of "UMPH" in order to have plenty of highway passing power. Sometimes, before I know it, I'm at 90-95 when passing on the highway. (My bad... :()

4) With about $10k you can buy a relatively newer liberty (KJ or KK) with few miles on it. I bout my '04 in '09 for about $8.6k. (I'll be honest here.) I actually DON'T like the transmission. It's probably just as bad if not worse than the Pilot. However, a Pilot is A LOT more expensive to fix, if you take care of the transmission in your Liberty you probably won't have problems (mine was bought used and has ****** problems now...it could have been abused.), the engine is practically bulletproof. I'm gonna throw that out there.

I hope you make a good decision, and either way I feel like you're going to enjoy your choice of vehicle. :)

Let me put it like this
I owned a KJ
Sold it due to poor mpg
The wife drives 75 miles per day ,give or take
We now have a VW Tiguan
The KJ does 1 thing better ,go off road
And I have a modded TJ for that
The VW carries the same in cargo
0-60 and 60-0 way way way better
Oh yeah the KJ tows more but I have nothing
