there doesnt seem to be a definitive consensus that i can find. some say yes, some no, some say it doesnt matter.

bottom line; is carb cleaner safe for my 02 for cleaning the throttle body or do i really need "throttle body cleaner" to avoid damaging anything?

Check the labels...from what I've read, modern throttle bodies have a teflon coating on them which carb cleaner may remove. throttle body cleaner is supposed to prevent the removal of that coating.

also be sure to use a nylon bristle brush instead of a wire brush, for the same reason.

Be careful even using TB cleaner on those drive-by-wire TB's like those used on the HEMI's as it will damage them.Seen one to many come in with codes that lead back to a TB cleaning which then cost then hundreds of $$$ to replace the TB.

The automated no cable systems was originally developed by the military and Boeing for their new 777 aircraft, back in 1998?
Years later after fly by wire, a car based system was developed called drive by wire.
Just one more thing to go wrong in computerized cars. (TSB for Toyota & Others)
I like my 04 with cable....real throttle input/response.

Good point on the warning for drive by wire throttle body.
There must be new, safe, commercial products the dealer's use for emission service and cleaning then.
Was 2008 the first year for drive by wire Jeeps ie KK?

There was a 13+ million vehicle recall for toyota and that crap.

No safe cleaning product for drive by wire TB's besides taking it off and using hot water and mild soap. The 1st year of that crap for the Liberty was '07.
