I'm a new Liberty owner ('06, 3.7, 42RLE).

When I shift into Drive, I hear a little "whirring" sound ... it lasts for a couple seconds. It sounds like something is moving into position.

Is this normal?

Welcome to the world of fully electronic transmissions. That sound is the trans whirring your servo into place. The Mopar transmissions of the past 10 years or so seem to be especially noticeable. The 545RFE in my Ram does the same thing.

OK, thanks for the feedback! I don't mind the sound as long as it's normal :). I'm just trying to be careful to slow myself down to wait until the whirring stops before trying to accelerate... I can't imagine it'd be good for it to just "shift & go" before it's done engaging, though when I'm in a hurry the temptation is there ...

It is the first thing they check when you take it in for an appraisal. The idiot will keep switching between Drive and Reverse and see how fast it engages..
Anyway, as the weather gets colder, it works slower.
