Mine has the ignition switch in the column worn out to the point that it can feel like a bad starter. If you turn the key all the way forward it'll go "thump", lights go out and starter clicks but it doesn't turn over the engine. When I first bought the Jeep I figured it was a bad starter, figured it probably needed one anyways and how hard could a starter replacement be, and that's how I learned started replacements on these suck.
Anyways, the trick with the ignition switch is to turn the key "almost all the way" forward, and it'll start perfect. If I turn the key as much as possible it'll do the "thump- no start" thing every time.
This is one an ignition that is so worn I can pull the key out while it's running.
