Depends on the lift. The spring lifts make the ride better... well most of them do (Rusty's, OME). The spacer lifts on the other hand.. the ride is a bit more "bouncy".

Hey, Wild, take it from an old Alabam'y boy, the ride with our 2" RevTek lift was smoother in terms of spring rate, etc, however, it handled a bit "squirrely" until I put the Rubicon rims on it. That widened the track a bit and took away the unstable feeling. Even my wife said it feels more like a Jeep now...(forgive her, she's from Arkansas)

comparing my 2 week old lift to the 60,000 mile suspension that it replaced....the lift is way better feeling. much firmer and feels more "together" on the highway. i havent widened the stance, but i can see where that might make it feel even better.

If I get Rustys lift, will I have to get wider wheels? Or will it be stable enough on its own?

I have the OME kit with stock sized wheels and 255/70/16 tires. I have run that set up for 30,000+ miles and it rides like a champ. The ride is better then stock and feels VERY stable.

35,000 on my OME heavy duty springs , rancho shocks and still riding like a caddy at 80 mph, LOL It completely changed the way the KJ felt out on the road much better all around. I recently put spidertrax wheel spacers on but can not really notice any difference except for looking much better

Mine feels pretty good with the stock rims and just slightly wider tires on them. Much better than stock, worlds better than rocky-road's budget lift.

How much of extra wear and tear related problems would you say caused by lift? I am sure it increases significantly.

No extra "wear and tear" on the jeep and if you "do it right" it will be better for the tires

by do it right I mean replace struts and shocks with it
bad struts and shocks can cause uneven tire wear

You can make the ride as stiff or as soft as you want by changing the sring rate of the springs. OME has several ones available and most of the lift kits use their springs anyway. When purchasing the lift specify that you want the factory spring rate and you will get a similar ride quality. If you plan on doing serious wheelin' then go to a slightly stiffer spring. Tires also play into ride quality and can make a huge difference. For example and take two identical tires, one with a "C" load rating and the other with a "E" rating and you will find that the "E" rides much stiffer that the "C".

SO, to answer your question, a lift can make the ride significantly better if setup properly. There are several companies that make really good products. But you get what you pay for.
